I can assume that in Northern Mongolia it is not enough Elk for successful hunting In Northern Kazakhstan - the elk is available, though the quantity is not so great. For example: Elk in region Astana (North of Kazakstan) The biggest population of an elk in Asia - in asia parts of Russia. There is more than 300000 elks. Hunters in Russia extract about 15000 elks annually

That's Elk, not to be confused with the Benevolent Order of Elks, also a prolific species. Grizz Indeed, no human being has yet lived under conditions which, considering the prevailing climates of the past, can be regarded as normal. To my knowledge there's two different subspecies in Asia. The Tian shan and Altay wapiti. Or maral as they call them.. Don't know about their status in Mongolia, but you can hunt them in Kasakstan and the Asian part of Russia. I shot this small one in Russia this sept.. There were lot's of them bugling, but this area doesn't keep up with the trophy potential in Kasakstan. My first goal was ibex, so this was just a bonus.. [QUOTE] I shot this small one in Russia this sept.. There were lot's of them bugling, but this area doesn't keep up with the trophy potential in Kasakstan. My first goal was ibex, so this was just a bonus.. Anders! Forgive for my note! You hunted on border of dwelling of a maral in Krasnoyarsk region. Therefore, it is impossible to shot a very big maral in that region . More likely we can speak about a transitive deer between a maral and isubr. The maral is usual in Siberia (Tien Shan, Altai and Sayan mountains). East areas of Krasnoyarsk region serve as border of its distribution on the east. Outside of Krasnoyarsk region, in taiga grounds, their relatives close to marals — isubr live. They in less size, are more light , and horns at them are developed accordingly more poorly. If a maral reach weight to 300 kg, Isubr it is powerful 200 kg meet seldom. Marals and Isubr — large and very beautiful animals. Both these of a deer — inhabitants of a taiga. Their food makes: a bark, kidneys and young runaways of trees, a heather, a grass, a moss growing on trees, and in give them hay, root crops, grain cereals. During the rut period which at them begins in the tenth of September and proceeds within a month, between bulls there are the fierce fights, quite often coming to an end destruction of the weak. The greatest marals, of course, in Kazakhstan. Usually 10-11 kg on the average. In mountains of Altai - 8-9кг. And to the east, they are less in sizes.

I have found here it: "Moose" comes from the American Indian Natich word "moos," for the animal. "Elk" comes from an Old Norse word "elgr," for the animal.

Thanks Igor! Great info! Interesting that the stag I shot might be a "mixed" stag. Even though they normally don't get that big in those areas, some monsters have been taken. I think there have been shot a 15 and a 17 kg stag by the same outfitter.. Thanks again! I do not deny the fact, as in the Western Sayan mountains it is possible to shot a trophy on 15 kgs. But it will be result comparable with trophies in Kazakhstan on 20. The probability to meet in the Western Sayan mountains a maral with the sizes of the big than 15 kgs comes of less than one percent. The same concerns also by ibex. The average trophy of a ibex in the Western Sayan mountains is less than metre. An average trophy of a ibex in Kirghizia 1,10-1,20. it is almost impossible to shot a record trophy of a mid asia ibex in the Western Sayan mountains. Naturally and in Kirghizia or in Kazakhstan it is possible to shoot a small ibex. It depends on degree of physical condition of the hunter too. For example On a photo there are some trophys from Western Sayan mountains:

Today maral hunting is very restricted in Mongolia. That was different 15 to 20 years ago ! We shot very big marals in the north and central part of this country. Now the good address is Kasachstan ! Look at the reports of Profyhunter / Igor !
