Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has issued an order to hunt down a tiger that is believed to have killed at least four people in the state’s Nilgiris district.

The big cat, given the name T23, has claimed the lives of four people so far and had been evading capture for the last six days. Five teams comprising more than 75 people were working on the ground to capture tiger T-23, which killed the fourth person today (Friday). As the forest department’s efforts to trap the feline did not yield any results, a hunting order has been issued now.

It may be noted that in March this year, a shoot-at-sight order was issued for a tiger after it mauled four people to death in Kodagu district of Karnataka. After the big cat killed a minor boy (its fourth victim) in the district, two MLAs raised the issue in the Assembly, following which the state government gave to order to shoot the feline dead.

In another incident, a man was mauled to death by a female tiger inside the buffer area of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Sita Ram (45), a resident of Manjhra Purab village within the jurisdiction of Tikonia police. He was attacked and killed by the big cat when he had gone to Nighasan range of the buffer zone for grazing cattle. The carnivore dragged him into the forest even as his fellow villagers sounded an alarm. Later, his mutilated body was recovered from the forest.

In yet another incident, two farmers were injured in an attack by a tiger in Hemrajpur village in the Meerganj area of Bareilly district. According to a forest officer, Chandrapal (42) and Dharampal (40) were working in their field in the village when the big cat emerged and attacked them.
