We hunted South Western Minnesota for the opening week end and it was really a great time. A little cool the opening morning but the dogs worked great and the birds were plentiful. We had our possesion limits by 10 on Monday and the hunt was over too soon. Pictures will follow soon.

Charles, great photo of the group. It is funny, when I see photos like that the first thing I do is look at the dogs. You guys look like you had fun.

I am heading over to North/South Dakota on Friday for a week of hunting. Going to be 5 miles below the border and hunt both states each day. My yearly slice of heaven on earth.

When I am in a hurry I forget my disclaimers!

I posted the pics but did not hunt -- I was holding the couch down as usual... Roll Eyes

Chic,

Not sure where you are hunting but I just returned from 5 days up around Mound City on the eastern side of the Missouri and just south of the ND/SD state line. The drought this summer hit the area hard, they were even taking cutting crp for hay. There was so little cover compared to last year. These are all wild birds with several different farms and our group usually averages 170/180 birds for the first 5 days. This year we shot 80 and hunted till dark. So we worked this year but that's the way it goes. The more time I get to spend in the field with the dogs the better. It was cold sat/sun and then warmed to mid 40s low 50s and sunny, perfect weather. Lots of hens and birds were holding tight for us. No standing corn or sunflowers and mostly hunted crp, wood lots, creek beds and draws. We had an awesome time as usual, my 5 days of heaven too.

Prewar70,

We were East of Watertown about 45 minutes and a little South. The corn was still in the field and of course that is where the majority of the birds were but there are hundreds of birds in that area. We hunted on my friend Al's farms and had no competition from other hunters. We hunted over the dogs in the mornings and pass shot a few coming out of the corn to roost in the CRP.

I am the same way! (about looking at the dog first) Well, maybe it's only right. After all the pup did bring back the bird for the picture! Smiler
