You can say that again......I'll let KG(aka Picture Donkey)post the pics since he took about 1100 or so. We smashed 'em today.....and then had the best duck dish I've ever tasted for lunch.

NortonOK well, I guess KG isn't going to post the pics of aforementioned hunt anytime soon so.......note the bonus woodie on top of the heap of mallards quite the rara avis in January in these parts....and kudos to the chef and host of this late season hunt.

calgarychef1"JUST MALLARDS" ????? Mallards were the trophy for me when I grew up. Just seeing these pics makes me smell the slough water and gunpowder. I've been dreaming of a nice duck shoot for awhile now...thanks for sharing.

NoCALCollector, I want to buy my wife a new lens for duck photography. She has a Nikon 5000D what would you suggest for taking photos like yours?

I am by no means an expert on Nikon technology because all of my equipment is Canon.
If you can get a hold of David Stimac through Ducks Unlimited that would be great. He uses Nikon equipment and will probably recommend a good lens for your wife. His work gets published all the time.
ZOOM LENS
I would recommend a zoom lens with image stabilization technology in the 100-400mm range.
FIXED TELEPHOTO
She can go to fixed telephoto 400mm or maybe 600mm but that is for very experienced photographers (professionals) who can justify the expense. With fixed telephoto the results will be awesome, she will need a tripod, and maybe a high power Apple iMac for post processing.
So maybe a lens like AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED would be a great option for her. Very very versatile and many Nikon pros use it for majority of their work. Hope this helps.

Gerrypeters375Many thanks, collector, for some beautiful photos. (I'm with Calgarychef1. I, too, grew up with mallards. They were on my NY Atlantic flyway in those days of my youth and I often jump shot them along our brook or sneaked up on a beaver pond for them. I never really hunted mallards again until a few trips to Canada (and the locals were complaining that blacks were cross breeding with mallards) Thanks,again, for some nice pictures)
