Has anyone who has used Hevi-shot/Hevi-steel had failure to extract issues?

Yesterday I finally got to use my Hevi-steel in the field and had nearly 50% of the shells failed to extract in my Rem 870 SuperMag. Of course compounding the issue I would cycle a second shell forcing the empty further into the chamber. I have never had a problem with this shotgun in the 5 years I've been shooting it.

IMO, It's not the ammo...the 870 super mag's rep is terrible as far as feeding & ejecting. I know a few guys who sold theirs immediately after the first hunt, because of reliability issues. However, the new VERSA is a whole different deal.

I have yet to have feeding issues w/ Hevi-Shot, as I use it exclusively in several different autoloaders.

BTW, IMO, Hevi-Steel isn't worth the money, might as well be a steel shot w/ the fancy name.

Just my experience, I'm not bashing your gun.

Thanks CamoManJ...I don't discount the reports on the 870 except this is the first problem in nearly 6 years that I've ever had.

As for Hevi-steel being glorified steel, spot on...it didn't kill anything better than the Kent Fasteel I used last year. It groups amazing so I don't want to give up on it. I think I might have to polish the bore.

I guess one could say it keeps me from being a bird hog when those big groups decoy in. BOOM

I cleaned the heck out of the bore and resolved any issues with Hevi-shot. This evening, I limited out on mallards...in a blizzard.

Glad to hear it's working out for you, a good & thorough cleaning job solves a lot of issues.

What Hevi-Shot loads & choke did you use for those blizzard mallards?

I used both Hevi-steel in #2 & Hevi-shot HV 1-1/4oz in #4. Both loads proved to be about equal with the standard Hevi-shot causing more damage to the breast meat. Based on price, I find Hevi-shot too expensive @ $2.00/round ($20.00/box) versus $0.68/round of the Hevi-steel ($17/box).

I'm using the standard Remington Modified choke (it's about the only one I use besides my turkey choke). I'll be honest a lot of the shots were close and an IC and #4 would have been more than sufficient.
