I had a wonderful mornings sport decoying wood pigeon onto a field of late wheat stubble. I set up some 30 decoys - half shells, full bodies and a few frozen birds plus a flapper - and enjoyed 4 hours of great sport shooting a Beretta 20 bore Silver Pigeon using 28 gr Eley Grand Prix fiber wad cartridges. I managed medium double figures not shooting as well as I can. My Springer had a blast retrieving and picking up and the Terrier tried to kill all the already dead pigeon!

Wood pigeon or woodies have to be some of the most testing sporting birds reaching speeds of 50 - 60 mph, jinking and jiving and away before you knew they were there!

Driven pheasant, partridge and walked-up grouse are all great fun but for simple uncomplicated top sport, put on a camo jacket and a cap, carefully set out some decoys paying attention to the wind, build a blind and keep your eyes open and enjoy a morning or afternoon shooting woodies!

Simple shooting, sounds like a lot of fun. Do you eat them?

Yes, good eating, this time a pigeon onion bacon and leek pie with white wine and cream sauce....

Pretty much try and utilise everything we hunt / shoot except the crows and predators.

Nice! That looks delicious.

Way back when I had the chance to hunt South Africa, we spent an afternoon shooting pesky pigeons in a farmer's field. When done, we breasted out a few and roasted them over a small braii (spelled right) with some ostrich sausages and cold beers. I was a fantastic meal.
