In a deja vu of opening day about 4 years ago, there weren't many doves locally so I didn't go, but decided to carry my shotgun while I was putting out some minerals for my cattle. One unlucky dove flew by while I wasn't unloading mineral sacks. "Get the grease, honey, the great hunter is home." So.....after finishing that little chore, it was about sundown and I decided to go check out the tires of one of my tractors that we had been shredding thornworld with. I drive over to another section of the ranch and, as luck would have it, before I could get to the tractor, I was distracted by this herd (yeah, I know....sounder but if you say sounder around here, you get a lot of blank looks )of pigs on a little wallow hole next to a creek about 125 yards in front of me. I step out of the truck, Savage 99 .308 in hand, and pick out the biggest one (bad mistake, I've got to learn to stop doing that)and shot him in the neck. It's nearly dark and I get over there and what I thought was an 80 to 100 pound pig IS about a 175 pound boar. Sheeeeit, no help around. So I gut him, knife fighting the 10 billion mosquitos that are trying to eat me alive, and then manage to drag him up to the truck and throw him in the back, barely. I sounded like the little engine that could by the time I got him in the back of the truck. However, he will be good barbecue. End first days dove hunt. | |||
