6 of us killed 53. I managed to take my 15 bird limit with 2 boxes of shells. The numbers were off and so was my shooting, but we still had a great time.

Cold weather seems to have driven out the birds that were here last week.

We also had a fairly strong early morning east wind which sent the ones we had into the trees.

I gave in to the call of breakfast with one dove short of my limit.

I did have one that I could not find however.

I also cut down two pigeons that came out of the barn as I was walking back to the house - my only double of the day.

Not far from you Seven,just above Merced. By far the best season in quite along time. five shooters, five limits in 17 min. Had to look straight at the hood of the truck to drive out or it would drive you crazy with all the birds flying.Hard thing to put that gun down after ten birds when they are landing on your head.

Az F & G claim the numbers are up this year, but we aint seeing them. There are less than 1/2 as many birds in our area this year compared to last year. We are only seeing 12 to 20 birds in 2 hours. Most are so wary that they are flying before we get close and they immediately duck behind the tress and fly low where we can't see a clear shot at them.

More birds than I've seen in many years. Anyone could have limited opening day. You could have taken multiple birds with one shot. After that rain moved in and many doves moved out. We still had an excellent hunt today. Everyone limited who knew how to lead high birds and how to pick good spots.

Going again tomorrow.

Here it's not just getting invited to a dove shoot, it's how many dove shoots...

Sunday was the first time I had a chance to go out. 4 of us shot 90 birds in about 1 hour. Lots and lots of birds!! Whitewings and Collard Dove were the mixed bag.

Did great! Got one bird that weighed close to 4 lbs. Nice point and retrieve by my Small Munsterlander.

In Texas, the Eurasian "collared" doves are not doves with a limit. They are considered an exotic and may be hunted year around with no limit. I wasn't there but if they shot quite a few "collared" doves as he said, then they could have easily been well under their limits. I would suggest that people should know the regulations and engage their brain BEFORE they "calculate" about an event for which they weren't present and imply an illegal harvest total.

BTW I'm in NE Texas and due to a series of mini-fronts and rain showers, until last Friday I hadn't even SEEN 15 doves for the first week and a half of the season.....starting seeing a few as I was shredding Friday.....I thought.....hmmmm, maybe Adam and I can get a hunt in tomorrow......it's been flooding ever since.......raining like a SOB right now, we've only had about 6 inches, some areas close to us are over 12.......20 miles away one friend got 5 inches Monday night, I got about 1/2 inch. In short, I haven't fired a shot at a dove but we're always wrapped up with them about Christmas, and this is the first year we've had a late split, should do well then.

Same deal in TN..15 a day and no limit on collared doves. We had a discussion before the hunt started on what a collared dove looks like. No one ever saw one. One guy said big almost like a pidgeon and someone said a white ring around the neck. I've still yet to see one. No idea what kind of table fare they make..if like pidgeon probably OK if young??

I'm still waiting for any semblance of a sense of humor from this guy......We get it, you're a real hard ass(who sometimes generously offers free pig hunts).......but lighten up, man.

Texas changed all the limits this year and with doves it varies by region.

But my friend's son shot his first dove, so that was a good hunt in my book.

Montana opened today. Lots of birds-ducks and geese. limited to half the limit today of 7 ducks, no fly overs for the geese.Lots of hunters.....

First dove season is over and second started last Saturday. The first season was pretty good and saw lots of birds. Most were those small or immature birds you typically see early. The bigger ones will show up later. For the first week there were heavy concentrations but then rain set in.

The birds hung around even in the rain but generally flew mostly in between showers. On one hunt we could have really cleaned up but the rain kept interfering. We wound up totally soaked so that our boots and clothes were saturated and excess water just ran off. I couldn't keep the rain off my glasses and had to shoot without them. That makes for an interesting hunt when you have eye cataracts. The field got where it was largely under water. And my boots got waterlogged and the bottom of one came off in the mud. I had to use a bootlace to tie it back on. And my gun got so soaked that when I later took the forearm off for cleaning it swelled so I couldn't get it back on. What a mess...also called really wanting to go hunting bad.

Eventually the sunflower seeds sprouted from all the water and the doves moved on out. Haven't been back yet for the second season. I need to check some deer stands anyway, so I guess I'll see what we've got..
