Got the bird back from the taxidermist. Woodcock are one of the hardest birds to mount and must be done by an experienced bird taxidermist. Many taxidermists say that they are equivalent to wet tissue paper when it comes to handling and prepping the skin.

Fallow BuckNice mount. It is probably my favourite game bird to hunt.
Indeed I think they are incredibly difficult to both mount and to depict either drawn or especially engraved.
In flight they have that certain way of carrying themselves that is completely unique.
Do you have the long and short bill variations in the states that we get in Europe?

L. David KeithIn my years of taxidermy, I found "Timber Doodle's" no harder to mount than Dove's or Snipe. Very delicate? Absolutely, but the same care was needed for the ones I mentioned and some I did not. Very nice mount collector

Now on the long and short bill for the North American Woodcock. There is a difference in length of the bill, it is done be holding a one dollar bill side ways. If the bill is shorter than the bill, it is supposed to be a male. If just about to the edge (or longer) then it is a female. So bottom line is that females are a bit bigger in size than the males. North American Woodcock is a good 1/3rd smaller than the European Woodcock. I will take a comparison pic and post it as soon as I get a chance.

ZephyrThere is a size difference between the American and European Woodcock. The European Woddcock weighing in at 328g or 11.5ozs and the American Woodcock at 215g or 7.6oz. Our females at 7.6oz are bigger than the males 6.2oz depending on the time of the season. Below are some pics that show Collector's way of sexing our American Woodcock

This is how we get what we call the short bills here which you can see by comparison. Several seem to be shot each year, but I have never handled one.

Highlander7Very nice! I haven't seen one in years although I haven't hunted small game the last few years. I did have one scare the hell out of me a couple weeks ago. I was checking my deer hunting area and nearly stepped on one. Never saw one before on this plot of land and been hunting it for the last 5 years.
