Turkey season is coming soon
I've shot just one -- a Merriam's back in Oregon -- and was so unimp[ressed with that stringy jake's meat that I gave away my turkey camo and calls. But it is still fun anticipating the spring season, knowing the joy that many hunters experience trying to fool these often-intelligent birds.
I should think about going after one of these abundant New Mexico Rio Grandes with my flint fowler, just to add a wrinkle.
Do we have some turkey hunters here?

There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.

Bill, wild Turkey can be outstanding on the table. I've taken Rio's and Eastern birds and my favorite recipe is to cut the breast into strips, marinade in buttermilk or Teriyaki sauce, dredge in flower and fry in Coconut oil. I use a crock pot for the wings, thighs and legs, cook them on high until the meat falls off the bone and make a smoked turkey salad dip out of those parts. It's killer! Turkey white meat can be as tasty as Bobwhite Quail or TN Ruffed Grouse etc. It's in prep and cooking. I'll be glad to give you all the details should you desire to tackle one again. Good hunting, David

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

I'm not really dedicated to turkey hunting, but I will chase them given the chance. Here's a nice tom I bagged a couple years ago while on an elk hunt with the kids.

He was pretty darn tasty.

I've cooked (and killed) more wild turkeys than most. Invite me and my 20ga to NM and I'll teach you how to cook one properly. Wink

Bill, if you’re gunshy about eating wild turkey, shoot a Jake for your next one. While I like all turkeys, the jakes tend to be more tender.

My Father and I both shot ours last weekend and I cut them up into thin slices then chunks. Battered and deep fried because it's white meat and it came out tender and absolutely delicious!! Simply put, can't beat the calling/ hunting experience and the table fare!!
