Black ducks.....
....are a mainstay here in New England so I thought I'd start a thread to highlight them. I know at least one member that'll be able to contribute mightily to this tribute. Big Grin

I'll start off with one from yesterday morning on a salt marsh:

I've heard the black duck populations are in decline due to the hybridization with mallards. Is this true?

Nice drake you got there. I've never seen one on the Central or Mississippi flyways.

That looks a lot like the run down blind, the first one on the right of the access road, in Salisbury...

Nice bird.

To the other poster RE: the hybridization, from what I've read and been told, that is 100% correct.

Great duck. Years ago I shot two in central Illinois. I did not have them mounted and have for years wished I had because I have not seen another since then.

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

Around here, what most people call Black Ducks and "Black Mallards" are actually Mottled Ducks. I've never shot a Black Duck but I have taken a few Mottled Ducks.

Nice! I killed one black duck many years ago and have been on only one other hunt where a black duck was killed.

Congrats!

correct.

Good guess but different state.....the area you mention is now illegal to hunt and a favorite spot for wardens to lurk.

I've never shot a black duck so I can add anything in that regards. But, I spent today hunting Sika Deer on Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in VA and there are thousands of black ducks on the water there right now. Pretty neat to see.

I was at Mack's in Stuttgart yesterday. Would you believe GHG is making a Black/Mallard hybrid decoy? A pair is $19.95 and they look great. Great pics guys. I have shot several banded Black ducks here in TN over the years. A great bird. I have a drake that weighed 3 lbs 12 oz mounted on my wall. LDK

Nice. Yesterday MF and a bud killed 7 gaddies, 2 blacks, a greenhead and...

...a canvasback. Wink

I saw that.....awesome day for that MFer. All I have to offer is a coupla hoodies stone dead in one shot as they did a fly-by....and Nelli wouldn't touch 'em so I had to wait out the tide to cross the ditch. She retrieved the 2 blacks like a champ though. rotflmo

I have only seen one shot in the Mississippi delta. Friend shot it. Didn't realize what is was until showing a friend a pic. They do taste like mallards though.
Eeker

Funny how a common duck in one flyway is a real prize and rarity in another.

I lived on the MA SE shore many a year andhad the opportunity to shoot lots of black ducks when populations were good. Then the 80's, 90's and later came and the populations tumbled. The last black duck I shot was in the mid 90's and I had it mounted as it was a late season red leg. I made a decision to stop hunting them as my conservation effort. Do not get me wrong as it was only my decision and I believe hunting them is fine. I did truly enjoy the late season coastal hunt as this provided great opportunity for many species. I miss this hunting. Great pics and a majestic duck. MTG
