NorsemanChukar hunting on the Snake River?
I am hearing mixed reports that the chukar hunting is not good in otherwords low population.
Anybody hunting near Oxbow or brownlee reservoir on eithier side of the river, if so, what your experiences?

Craig NolanI've got a good friend that lives in Central Oregon, a true chukar fanatic; he says this year has been TERRIBLE and that the bird count is way down... acecdotal evidence, but his opinion nonetheless....

NorsemanI thought Reno is in Nevada?
The topic was about Snake River which is between Oregon and Idaho not Nevada.

SidnyeI do a float trip below Hell's canyon dam every september for last 20+ years and this year was pretty slow. Only saw a couple of coveys of birds on the Idaho side. (oregon season wasn't open.) Granted I didn't do a lot of walking, more of a spot and stalk deal.
If you have ever floated below the dam you know what I mean.
Pic of me and couple of birds.
if you use dogs make sure they know to avoid snakes. You'll find them in September.
we named this one "nippy"

Kamiah KidChukar hunting has been real slow, low populations are to blame.

NorsemanWhat the chukar hunting like this year?
27 January 2012, 01:52
Craig NolanNorseman,
Been to the Oregon side of the Snake for a few days both this January and last, near Oxbow; LOTS of birds both years, last year the snows were deeper and concentrated the birds, limits for all. This year just as many birds but more widely distributed, + they seemed spooky this year and more often-than-not they flushed wild at 25 - 35 yards .... All in all we did pretty well on Chukar, Quail and a few Huns ... Scenery is spectacular in that area, saw a mountain lion too ...

SidnyeThe Hell's canyon reach of the snake was ok. We did our annual float in September, unfortunately chukar season openned first weekend of October this year. Not sure why the change after decades of openning around 2nd weekend of sept.
as usual we had a grande time.
here's a couple of pics from Owyhee Res near Leslie gulch. Saw a number of birds. If you have a boat you'd increase your success.
We were fishing and pics from May last summer
Bird calling
If you havn't been to leslie gulch area, it is very pretty but does get hot in the summer
Average crappie but you catch them by the bucketful
Sept Hells canyon trip
My springer worn out (even though the season wasn't open he had fun)
luckily the fish were biting
we ate well
these birds got a pass
its big country
my son taking the hit
and me oaring the gear boat
always a good trip; the chukar part of the is a bonus
Idaho fish and game no longer allows hunting off a boat, even a raft. I know many may say that I may be lazy to shoot off the raft, but It's pretty rugged country
cant wait till next year
cheers

NorsemanSidnye,
do you mean that you cannot "shoot" off a boat or hunt or shoot bird's with access of a a boat?
It's NEW to me!

NorsemanGreat photo's by the way, please inform us of your camera equipment and type?
Your Springer reminds me of my Springer Spaniel named Siggy. I used to hunt out of Bully Creek, Pine Creek and Oxbow.

Sidnye"do you mean that you cannot "shoot" off a boat or hunt or shoot bird's with access of a a boat?"
Cant shoot chuckars off any boat. Never could shoot them off a power boat when under power (unless all momentum from power had stopped) but could shoot from oared powered raft. Not anymore
I heard this season chuckar will open in september like always.
For the photo guys, I use a canon 40d with a couple "L" lens. I put the camera and lens in a pelican box and put the pelican box in a dry bag. Seems a little reduntant but sometimes the boats flip.
To give credit where credit is due, my wife took the pics and me and my son in the boats.
She and the springer have had a couple "out of boat experiences" due to my oaring abilities and they walk wild sheep rapid and shoot the boats as they come thru.
