I have various calls that are either glass, aluminum or slate. The problem I have is that often the tone changes after I sand them. What may have been great may totally change after sanding .

Is there Any trick to maintaining consistent tone?

Try red scotchbrite. I like that better than sanding, I think it removes less material.
