I brought home a new puppy last Thursday, a male Llewellin Setter. He comes from good hunting stock, one parent out of Straight Creek Kennels in Ky, the other from Wingswept Kennels in Fla. He has, of course, already taken over the house! My daughter rode the 90 mile trip with me to get him, and the pup rode home in her lap. She had to go back to college today, and it was hard to tell who she is going to miss more, her parents or the pup. Chipper is 8 wks old, and I have it figured that when we have our fall break at the end of September (I am a teacher) I will begin working on manners and simple commands. Then, when we have our Christmas break (he will be six months) maybe I can get him on a few liberated birds and possibly a wild covey or two. My neighbor is an accomplished trainer and an old hunting buddy. I plan to make good use of his facilities and expertise. I have never trained a dog, but I have a good bit of experience hunting over setters and pointers. I know exactly what I want in a dog, and I hope my neighbor can steer me in the right direction to achieve that goal. I have already taken the old Parker and the BSS out of the safe and oiled them up. I plan to dig out all my old recipes for different ways to cook Quail. I am afraid that I am going to have to buy a new pair of briar britches because the old ones seem to have shrunk by several inches I have already re-read all my old Havilah Babcock books and have decided that I really don't want to shoot an elephant. I think my health will definately be better in November I posted here instead of the Dogs forum because I thought there would be more bird hunters here. The pup will be registered as Red Level Chipper because my old home place is on the "Red Level". | ||
