You need more than two weeks

You could spend that just taking the grouse of Idaho, Spruce, Ruffed, Blue, Sharptail and Sage. With gray partridge, chukars and CA quail along the way.

Or a quail safari starting in AZ for Gambels, Scaled and Mearns quail and on over to CA for California and Mountain quail then up to Northern Nevada for chukars.

Remember that AZ has four species and eight subspecies of tree squirrels and the prestige that would come with a grand slam of taking all of them.

Could mix in some waterfowl along the way. Band-tailed pigeons, white-winged and mourning doves, there's even a huntable population of ptarmigan in the Sierras.

I used to field trial with a guy that did Arizona every winter. On one trip he came back with his best dog snake bit, it was ugly but didn't kill her. She was back trialing that same spring. I've talked to several vet's about it and got pretty much the same advice. Pick the dog up and keep it quiet. If you close to a vet, go. But likely the dog will be dead or better when you get there. I have also hunted and trialed in snake areas a good deal and I've never had a problem with snakes.

A worse problem than snakes will be cactus. Get your dog use to wearing boots. I think Dunn's in Grand Junction, Tenn sells leather ones. I've also seen rubber ones. If your really going to go at it hard, I'd suggest boots anyway. They will keep a dog from pulling its pads. The dog pulls a pad, it's done for at least a week. Boot's can be made from bicycle innertubes. Good luck!

SBT I suppose you would need at least a month and better off with 2 months, now that would be a real bird safari.

I hear tell they do have a snake medication given to the dog before hand, vacsination type. I don't know how good it is but better than nothing. Rattle snakes is bad news on most dogs. I train mine to stay back and let them be but that is not to say they will all the time.

First off, are you talking about an exclusive upland bird shootfest, or including waterfowl? Are you looking to do a lot of different stuff from day to day, or just get somewhere to plant yourself and spend time there? In either case, I agree that two weeks may not be enough time...

If waterfowl are on the hit list, I can offer my pair of coppers on the matter.

SBT, why don't you just head over to South Dakota? The Missouri River runs through it, (central flyway for waterfowl), and the Pheasant hunting is second to none. I no longer hunt waterfowl, but when I did it was in North Dakota and it was amazing. I still take my dogs to South Dakota and it is worth every dime I spend. You won't regret it.

I have to second the South Dakota post. Lots and lots of open "public land" to shoot on. You MIGHT find a few quail, but they are not very common. However, the pheasant, prairie chickens, and sharptail grouse will keep you more than busy. Also, a lot of the reservations have areas designated for hunting.

If you hunt on public lands, you will have to use steel shot. If you hunt private land, lead shot is okay. If you go the first two weeks of the season, hunting hours are from noon to dark. Bag limit is 3 of each specie per day (I have yet to hit that) with aggregate possession total of five days bag limit (15 of each specie.)

Since you can hunt birds from noon on, that leaves the mornings for other fun activities like shooting prairie dogs.
