Wyoming Grouse
The Sage Grouse in Wyoming are doing great. I am seeing groups of 8-10 from one end of the Red Desert to the other. Our gas field is 2700 sq. mi. and the locals are saying they have never seen so many birds.

I did see one of the reasons the Sage Grouse are in trouble, the crows are following the hens back to the nests from the waterholes and eating the eggs or the young. I haven't caught this on camera yet....been too busy culling crows Big Grin As long a the Hornady boys keep making those .17's the crows in the Great Divide Basin are in a bind.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

I absolutely love hunting prairie bombers. One of my all time favorite upland species. Good to hear they're doing well in WY.

Doubt those are crows. Ravens and quite protected. This very behavior was just discussed in a recent Star-Trib article, I believe 8/1. Search startribune.com.

Not to worry they are all crows and all in grave danger as long as they target Sage chicks.

For them to be protected they will need Kevlar feathers BOOM

I was hauling kiln dust down to the gas fields around Pinedale WY last fall and winter it was quite apparent that drilling and fracking doesn't bother the grouse much. They were all over the place.

I am at Wamsutter Wy and we had to write a policy on driving speeds in Grouse areas. God did not make them over-bright homer, but the damn Crow/Ravens are smarting up real quick. Don't get a shot under a hundred yds now.....they keep that up I will break out the 25 WSSM. At $2 a shot I will have to improve my long range shooting.

The Great Divide Basin has had plenty of rain this year. I have seen 3 bulls that will go 350" and one that is an easy 370". It looks like the speed goats will have a banner year as well. Saw one that might go 90".

Cheshire,

Just a little warning that crows are protected under the migratory treaty act (magpies as well). Crows can only legally be shot during the crow hunting season.

Good news for sure!
