I thought some of you duck hunters might enjoy seeing how my duck pond is coming along this year. As you can see, it is planted in corn during the summer until I flood it in early November. I have another roost pond about 1/3 of a mile away from this pond that allows the ducks to cycle twice each day into the feed pond. During duck season, both mornings and afternoons, 500-700 ducks pour into the feed pond before heading back to the roost pond. The pond has a small stream flowing through it that can fill the pond if we've had a normally wet fall. However, if it has been dry, I have a 6" well that can pump 350 gallons of water per minute into the stream bed so it can be filled on demand. This well also feeds 4 irrigation risers in the pond in case we need to give the spring and summer plantings a welcome sip. It all seems to work and certainly is fun! Here's what the pond looks like before I drain it in late February. You should be able to see a duck blind in the middle of it: | ||
