Sub-species of Brant
Posting this for reference. There are 3 sub-species of Brant Goose:
1) Dark-bellied Brant
2) Light-bellied Brant
3) Black Brant

There are many biologists out there who would love to declare each of these sub-species into full species. While some are at it, they would have you believe that "Grey Brant" is also a species.

Hell they may want to make each of these populations which breed in a different area and winter in a different area their own species. Case in point, "Oriental Brant", "Eastern High-Arctic Brant", and the "Western High-Arctic Brant".

I believe three sub-species is probably enough for the Brant. Rest of the "imaginative" sub-species (insert Smiler icon) could be intergrades between these three sub-species.

Cool, where are the dark bellied brant found? I've killed plenty of atlantic brant in RI and the Chesapeake, they are a cool bird!

Dark-bellied Brant breed in Siberia and winter in North-west Europe including coastal England.

99% of brant killed on the Atlantic side of USA are Light-bellied...this year there is a 2 bird limit. Although in some years we have had 3 bird limit as well.

For some reason I have always wanted to hunt Brant. I just never seem to get around to it. Too bad because I'm right on the Chesapeake Bay and I can get into them fairly close to where I am.

I think I need to realign my priorities this winter!

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
