Fwiw there is such a thing as a pointer who's great on wild birds, but when put on pen-raised quail, will point them but balk at retrieving. I've heard of that before and seen it once in person.

I like to think that's a dog who's got pride and finds this sort of thing beneath his/her dignity.

On a hunting dog's counting ability - I heard about a lab that used to sneak down and steal other hunters' ducks from behind them in the blind and put them on his owner's pile of ducks...

Actually, that is very common. Many dogs dislike retrieving doves and pigeon; aka flying rats.

Our Britts will retrieve other hunter's birds after the hunter gives up looking. Then they bring the birds to me, they know that they get to eat those birds. They love the smell of any game meat cooking on the grill and wait patiently by my side for their portion.
