Arkansas report: new year's eve update

I just returned from the south Stuttgart area. Should have been there a week ago as the temps rose and all the fields and timber thawed out. Ducks were hitting the rice fields hard and some good timber shooting was available if you had water. We found the light geese and had a good shoot on Snows, Blues, Ross and Specks. We did shoot a few ducks but not many. Wish I'd had a video camera as watching the geese come into the spread was a sight to see. The sun was at our back and they put on quite a show. Had we been there last week....

Hi Larry,
Yes. With the number of geese already there, it should be a promising conservation season. Only a conservation season number is needed (call the AR G&F and they give you a free number). No other license required. Here are the details:
Light geese only(snows, blues & ross geese)
No limit
electronic callers
Shooting hours end 30 mins after sunset
This season is set to help reduce the light geese numbers that are increasing at an alarming rate, thus destroying the northern nesting grounds. Weather will play a role in success, and I recommend February as the best month. If you want details just send me a PM.

I think you and I were on the same schedule. I hunted over near Reydel. Should've been here last week type of hunt...my friends were doing great until the day before I got there. Always fun but the ducks moved somewhere else.

I'm going back in late Jan. hopefully better by then.

Collector - you are right, mallards in the timber are the best...

Chris, unless something changes, I'm fairly sure plugs can be removed during the conservation season. I don't think we're getting the overall flock reduced one bit. These are some of the most wary of all waterfowl and many bands are showing birds in the 12 years and older range. That's a phenomenon for a wild goose I would think. We're already changing decoys and techniques. Hope this will be another great season. I hope to return for another try before regular duck/goose closes and then I'll be there as soon as the conservation season opens.

Just got off the phone and the current report has ducks and geese by the tens of thousands pouring into Arkansas. Friends are getting limits every morning in the timber, any pool of water or dry grain fields. Mostly by 9am. This morning it was storming and lightning but the birds paid little attention to it. Like last year, I'll be in Dallas while the best days are passing me by. Will be there as soon as I can get home and repack.
