Cross breeding
A park on the river near my house has some domestic type white ducks. Several years ago some mallards took up full time residency. There are now bunches of ducks that it is obvious they cross bred. Makes me wonder how the different types of duck remain pure in the wild. Ducks are one of a few types animals that rape--I have seen them do it. Don't know if the cross breeding was rape or recreational.

Do you mean cross breeding?

Rape? Inbreeding? Ducks?

Any thoughts, collector? rotflmo

Yea cross breeding--that would be correct. I guess they'd be cross if getting raped.

Most domestic duck breeds were created from mallards so they can interbreed with many wild duck species which create hybreds.

Inbreeding would be the same gene pool reproducing within itself. This is done with many animals, for instance dogs and a lot of poultry. In those circles it is called line breeding in order to refine certain traits.

Ahem....family oriented website so I cannot get real graphic here Smiler

carpetman1 used the right terminology....but I will make it specific to one species (not generalizing all ducks).

MALLARD DRAKES are the biggest Rapists in the Avian Kingdom.

Multiple Mallard drakes during breeding season will rape a single hen and many times it is done so ferociously (in water) that the hen is drowned.

Due to the aggressive nature of the Mallard drakes our Black Duck population in North America is in trouble....also the Mottled Duck has its own Mallard related troubles.

In New Zealand...Mallards are raping the Pacific Black Duck out of existence and in couple of decades there probably will be no pure New Zealand Black Ducks left in the wild.

I corrected the in breeding to read cross breeding as that is what I intended. Yes I have seen mallards rape where several males held the victims head under water.

Mallards are very prolific and aggressive, sounds like a good reason to shoot more of them. I think Muscovies are just as aggressive and they produce sterile mules when they cross breed with any other duck species.

Many species of waterfowl will cross breed. Here is a Ross/Blue Goose hybred I took in Texas and a Mallard/Black Duck hybred I took here in Tennessee

collector, when I shot that bird, a TX biologist was at the lodge when we returned. He said that was only the second one he'd ever seen. Now, it seems I hear about one every year or so coming out of AR. We are looking into next year in the Dakota's. Seems a big group gets together and combines their dekes. Could be 100 hunters with thousands of decoys. I hear it's a sight to behold.

The New Zealand Grey Duck is the one that the mallards are messing with. The pacific black duck is from Australia.

In NZ I have also seen Canada geese crossing with domestic geese in the parks.

I had a bunch of Khaki Campbell ducks on my place and the drakes were rapists all right and yes gang rape at times.

I shot this duck the first day of last season in East Texas. To me it looks like it must be a cross between a domestic white and a wild mallard. Looking back on it i wish that i would have had it mounted because it was a really good looking bird and pretty unique.

Interesting birds guys. I have never seen anything here in Alberta that would be anywhere close to one of those for being cross bred of any sorts. Nice birds!!!
