Going to buy a new muzzle loader (Inline). Some tell me get the largest caliber you can. I am looking at 52 or 54 cal but, are these 2 calibers going to be around? Is there choices for ammo for these? And there seems to be so much out there for the 50 cal it seems to be the weapon of choice. Your thoughts??

I have from .44 to .58 and the best for everything from biggest animals to groundhog is the .50 You can use sabots or full solid conicals , the twist is your mail objective 1 in 28" to 32" is the best for conicals and sabots 1in48" will shoot round balls and conicals, CVA's are the cheapest and really accurate , go to http://www.natchezss.com If you want the ultimate .50 that shoots like high power to 300 yards Savage ML-11 is the name !

Find out what is legal where you hunt before purchasing... that will most likely narrow the field some.

That being said, inlines are alot of fun but are built mainly to hunt. I have 3 inlines. 2 Whites and a Knight.

For sabot shooting, sealed primer:
Knight DISC Elite (can shoot conicals as well)
TC Omega
Savage MLII

For conical or sabot shooting, exposed primer:
White .451 or .504: M97, M98, Whitetail, Super 91 (known for excellent conical shooting)
Knight Bighorn .50
TC Black Diamond .50 (from what I have read it shoots sabots better)
Austin & Halleck .50

Of course I am partial to the Whites and the Knights. Whites I have are .451 M98 and .504 Super 91, I shoot full size conicals and can shoot inside 1 inch all day. Not to disagree with a previous poster but for long conicals a shallow grooved fast twist barrel is what is best; 1-20 for .45 and 1-24 for .50. I can shoot sabots with them as well and very accurately... but that is what I have my Knight DISC Elite for! I haven't shot a more accurate sabot shooter than my Elite...

Find out what you can use legally and then see what's out there.

Don't listen to anything catboat has to say. He wants you to hunt with a flintlock. FORGET IT! The inline muzzleloader is the ONLY way to go.

You have the right idea. Get an inline and start to enjoy the sport of muzzleloading the way it was MEANT to be.

Get a 50

More bullets available, More Sabots available, Easier to find components, More Ballistic Efficiency, Easier to sell later on, etc, etc...........

50-cals are the best route you can take. Thy offer the least trajectory complaints & all ML stores stock overwheming 50-cal accessories over all the other calibers.

If you are interested in a side lock I would get one or an inline both will shoot and kill deer or anything else.
Would get the 50 cal in either,in the 50 you can shoot the 40 cal bullets just as good as a 45 cal.
I shoot 40 cal bullets in my 50 cal encore and 45 cal bullets in my savages.Either shoots 1 inch groups or better.
