Adapting a Soule Creedmoore to a Pennsylvania rifle?

I would like to mount a Soule type Creedmoore to this Pennsylvania rifle, and it does not have the steel plate with the screw holes for mounting on.

Whats stopping me from screwing it directly to the stock? Maybe I might need to cut a shallow inlet for the wood to mate with the curve under the base plate of the sight, or have a piece of steel made up to screw permantly to the rifle and screw the sight to that?

If there is another peep sight that will fit properly I would be just as happy, but it doesn't look like it was concieved to take one.

The other Pedersoli muzzleloaders rifles that are shown with a peep sight have Creedmoores that do not fold down, rather sit vertically and are held in place by a screw, the houseing remaining in the stock, but the upright pin of the sight slides up and out.

Has anyone here tried adapting a folding Creedmoore to such a rifle?

I did this to a Hawken once,, had a plate made to fit on top of the rear tang and run back along the pistol grip,, then had it glassed , plate was drilled and then tapped for the sight base and mounted,, held up for years..

Every one I have seen just mounted into the wood, hasn't lasted

Makes sense Dave, I found another thread by a bloke who did exactly that and really it doesn't sound diffucult. I will look into making a base plate, but what contour and threads should I cut into it?

I had the smith, match the plates head to the tang, and then shaped it to match the base of the sight, couple of things I foregot,,went and looked at it again,, the rear screw is a tad longer, when he glassed it,he had a metal pillar placed in the rear for the screw to go into ,
