I shot my first pig with my friends' muzzle loader, a Pennsylvania .45.

After missing a nice boar which I had stalk to around 40 yards (I had been shooting at 100m at the range that day and used the same sight picture so I shot over him) I took out my new treestand to a game trail on the edge of a field.

After an hour or so a group of pigs came in directly under me, on of them caught me turning to look and put the rest in alarm. I could see one just 20m away from my tree still in the thick undergrowth which I took a bead on and fired. As the smoke cleared the pig lay where I had shot it kicking slowly. A very nice young sow of around 35kg, or 80lb.

Now that I have got that out of the way I want to get a big boar and later in the season a nice deer with the same gun before I decide to buy one of my own. Probably a Frontier in .54cal.

The funny thing is that I got so exitec about shooting a pig with thi smokepole, I mean, it's not really much different to using my open sighted .30-30 from a practical point of view but just sooo much more satisfying.

It sounds like you enjoy shooting BP guns I got started 30 plus years ago when a friend introduced me into the sport. Since I have taken many Deer but since there are no Pigs in Kansas at least not close I have not had the opportunity. I have tried to get my other friends interested in shooting Black Powder even seeing my shooting and bringing home the Deer they just can’t get past the cleaning and hunting when it is hot. It is just not in there blood.

Congratulations on your successful hog hunting.

BTW I have both a Knight Inline in 54 and a Lyman Great Plaines.
The Lyman is very accurate for a cap lock but I don’t much care for there trigger.
I am going to check into putting a TC Trigger and Hammer on the Lyman.

Express, you are missing out on a sleeper of a gun. The Lyman Hawken is a fantastic shooter.
