Seasoning is the key. A little paprika and a touch of cayene... Seriously, if you season the barrel properly with bore butter and never use a solvent, you will have better accuracy, increased velocity, easier cleaning and you won't need viagra anymore either.

Would like your expert opinions on the use of bore butter. Does it prevent fouling or reduce it? Is the blackpowder barrel cleaner sold any different than windex? Is boiling water the best method to clean a barrel? let me know. Thanks to all...this is not my area of expertise. swede

Quote: Yes, but so do many many other things. Quote: Maybe - I use Glass Plus - window cleaner if fine, but avoid those with ammonia. Windshield washer fluid is fine too. Quote: Not in my book but it does work. I use the stuff above, then dry, then oil (atf oil). I used to use bore butter and Natural Lube 1000 but find that did not work as well as what I do now. Quote: Bore butter serves to season your barrel.....making it easier to clean. Never tried windex, so I don't know. In my old muzzleloaders, using hot water was the way I was taught to clean em. With the new inlines, I just clean them by running a patch with solvent through them..as long as you get em clean, it don't really matter how you do it.

Quote: If you go to the trouble of seasoning your barrel and then you put oil in it..........it takes away the seasoning you have done. To keep the seasoning, you can't put any oil bases lubricant in it...

Quote: Ammonia is a good cleaner and will only hurt your barrel if left in there for some time. Quote: Not boiling, but hot soapy water will clean as good as any commercial product out there. Maybe not as convenient but it does work. Quote: Bore butter might season you cast iron frying pan, but not your forged steel barrel. Forged steel is not porous like cast. Transmission fluid is an excellent rust preventative to use after you're finished cleaning. I have used it but I prefer Breakfree.
