What is the barrel twist for a Renegade? Has anyone had success shooting sabots? Thanks.

It has a 1 x 48 twist and will handle patched roundballs and minie/maxi bullets. I dont know about the saboted bullets. You can buy Green Mountain drop in barrels of various calibers and twists. My favorite is the .58 Cal in 1 x 72 twist for roundballs. I think they make some in 45 an 50 caliber with 1 x 28 twists for more modern bullets. They also make a .62 caliber (20GA) smooth bbl with rifle sights so you can shoot shot or Roundball. The Green Mountain drop in bbls allow you to use the T/C Renegade or 1" Hawkens to fill many Black powder needs. Good luck

I have a renegade in 54 cal. It shoots sabots fine---2 inches at 75 yards with my bad eyes and open sights. I don't use them however, the maxiballs just plain kill better.

Thanks for the response. Have either of you tried the Buffalo Bullet Co. lead hollow point? My local shop has one box of the maxi-balls and a half dozen boxes of the Buffalo's. If they work, I will take all of them off his hands...they have been there for a number of years with little interest from the in-line folks.

My 54 Renegade really liked the larger Maxi-Balls, but did not shoot sabots worth a damn. Roundballs were OK, but only on low loads like 70-80 grains FFg black powder. The TC GreyHawk and New Englander 50 cal. shoot the smaller 320 grain MB's best, all the way up to 120 grains of FFFg Pyrodex or real black powder.

My .50 Renegade shoots saboted bullets better than maxiball. I use 240 grain Speer .44 softnose Golddots. I've made several bragging shots with that combo. Oh, I use 100 grain Pyrodex too. I think I chronographed that load years ago and, if I remember right, it was about the same as a .44 Magnum. Good shooting, Grizzly Grizzly

I have not tried buffalo bullets. I generally use Lee's cast at home.

Buffalo Bullets work just fine and hit like the hammer of Thor.

I'll second don444 reply. velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

Here are my TC Renegades. The first two are Green Mountain Stainless Steel with 1-28 twist 50 cal. The have Lyman 57 SML peep sights. The front sights are Lyman 17 AML globe sights with Lee Shavers long range inserts. This one shoots 410 gr Hornady great plains bullets. This gun shoots sub 1 ½†at 100 yards. This gun is the same but it has double triggers. It shoots a 456 gr bullet made with a Lee 500 S&W mould. I paper patch these bullets and they shoot sub 2†at 100 yards. This last gun is also a TC Renegade with a Green Mountain Barrel. This one is a 32†1-18 twist .458 with a Lyman 57 SML peep and a Lee Shavers globe front sight with a level, and long range inserts. This gun shoots Paper Patched 45-70 bullets. Right now I am using a Lee 459-405-HB. This bullet shoots sub 1 ½†at 100 yards. These guns are set up right now to shoot out to 300 yards on targets. I use them for hunting but I would NOT shoot past 150 for the first shot. I am sure these guns would shoot sabots just fine. Ron

My .54 hawken shoots some sabots, the buffalo bullets and roundball. I personally use rb with 105 grains of FF. My last kill was a 2 yr old cow buffalo at 80 yrds. Both rb I shot passed thru. Whole lot less kick that the buffalo bullets.

I've shot both the round ball and the 410 grain Minie from the Lyman 533476 mould in my .54 Renegade. The round ball is OK, but the Minie is much quicker to load and hits like a BRICK! At one time I had it sighted in at 200 yards and was using 120 grains of FFg! I finally backed off to about 100 grains, just to conserve my shoulder. That 120 grain load behind the Minie would put them ALL into the "Baby Moon" hubcap at 200 yards. Never did like the idea of a sabot load as the projectile is just too light weight. Regards, WE

I've got a 50 flintlock renegade and it shoots sabots OK initially but I can't really use them effectively because they get so hard to cram down the barrel after a few shots. I suspect I am mangling the tips with the ramrod because after several shots they start flying all over the place going sideways through the paper. Maybe my barrel is tighter than most. I also used the prelubed conical Buffalo bullet for a couple years and have taken a few deer with them. They shot OK but it seemed I was not getting any expansion on deer, 50 in and 50 out, never recovered any. With a very nice hit behind the shoulder the deer would still run a long ways. Blood trail is massive but it can be a problem if you are hunting near a property line or on a smaller piece of private property. For me I use the powerbelts with very good results in the renegade. They are my most accurate, easily good for 100 yard shots, cause massive damage, broadsides have all been pass throughs with very large exit wounds. It is my feeling that with the short renegade barrel velocity is not real high putting it into a working range that is ideal for the powerbelt. I also have a long barrelled Lyman GPH that is a tackdriver with the powerbelts but I don't seem to get the penetration like the renegade, sometimes the powerbelt just disintegrates. I took a deer last year with it at 100 yards and attempted to find the non-exiting slug with my metal detector. Just couldn't find it with my hands. The only thing I found was a few little lead slivers all through the organs similar to what you might get if you tried to shave a block of wax. That was on a strong quartering away shot. It made it through the guts and to the liver but not into the lungs. Just took a doe last night with this combo. From a straight on frontal shot at 98 yds I recovered the slug at 168gr from an original 348.

I've been shooting a 54 Renegade using Lyman Great Plains bullets over Pyrodex and FFg. The load is: A 38special case full of FFg down the pipe, tap to settle then follow up w/100gr (by volume) of Pyrodex. Standard RWS #11 caps on a "hotshot" nipple give me cloverleafs at 50yds. Here in the UP you rarely get a shot beyond 75yds. The 54 cal stops them immediately and saves you from losing the deer (or yourself) in a cedar swamp. The marginal success I've had with sabots has put me off them. Might not have found the right load, but don't want to spend $$$'s finding it when the above formula works so well. The cocaine addict said "I don't use it to get high... I just like the way it smells!!!" Same w/black powder!!! Mike Si vis pacem... parabellum
