Hey guys-

Rifle: Knight Revolution II - Stainless Steel

After a completely thorough cleaning, including total disassembly and barrel scrub down, I sprayed Shooter’s Choice rust preventative on the external surfaces and used the following to coat the bore:

Thomson Contender’s T-17 Cleaning and Seasoning Patches.

Advertised as: “…an all-natural lubricant specially formulated to clean black powder substitutes like the popular Triple Se7en® powder. This lubricant reduces fouling, improves accuracy and prevents rust.â€

I was extra vigilant in cleaning the bore because I know of all the corrosion issues with shooting Hodgdon Triple 7 and blackpowder in general. Needless to say, I was shocked to find the patch colored with rust after pulling it out 8 months later.

What the f@^&$!?!? I’m pissed.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions for storage in the future?

Thanks!

Same crap happened to me with my last 2 Knight rifles. Oiled first one mildly, a year later, rust. Oiled the 2nd one liberally, rust.

I don't know what the heck the deal is. I have rust in my 3rd one too. I cleaned them so thoroughly as well. The muzzleloaders sit in the same safe as my other rifles.

If you learn of a solution, I'd like to know it.

That is total bullshit. I'm normally pretty level-headed but I am really torqued over this one. I just sent T&C and Knight both a detailed email.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the response.

I'd say the problem is mostly from storing the guns for a year without reoiling

T-17 is a fair cleaner but not the best rust preventative. Try some real rust preventative oil next time. Sorry to hear about the situation but Sheath or Rem Oil or others are better at preventing rust. If you want to use T-17 as a cleaner fine, but follow up with something else. I use Ballistol on my patch and ball guns and on most of my other rifles as well. I live in Arizona so rust is less of a problem.

I dont know about t-17,but it sounds like bore butter(all natural),which I have observed to change color over summer storage.I made up a large lot of patches with t/c bore butter(yellow) which promptly changed to an orange color, much like yours.
I have also had it happen in the barrel of guns.It seems to clean out with no damage to the bore, hopefully this is what has happened to you.

I use sowing mach oil. Got this tip from a maint guy at work, who also shoots BP. Its so fine, that it gets into every nook an crany in the barrel. If you put a drop on your finger tips, you can't hardly rub it off. I had a .50cal barrel go bad using TC's Bore Butter, no more for me. You might give it a try, and its cheap too. Al

I clean 777 out of the bore with water, dry patch it, then use alchohol to diplace any left over water. I let the barreled action sit out over night then push an alcohol patch through the next morning then a couple of patches covered in RIG before storage as it stays put better than oil.

I believe hot water down the bore is a must after shooting a BP rifle, even if you fire a single shot and regardless of the solvents and cleaners used.

Most metallurgy books state that stainless works best when left clean and exposed to an oxygen rich environment (air). I don't have the guts to try that...

If it's not rusting on the outside too I guess that means either something didn't get cleaned or the preservative is actually doing the rusting. I left my guns in a closet for 6 years when I was in the service after rubbing them down with Hoppe's gun grease with no problems, but none of them were stainless or muzzleloaders.
