Hi, first time here, my knowledge about muzzle loading guns nil, so my apology for silly question. In fact, I am posting this when asked by mu friend who has no computer, but I am also curious what you gonna say. Anyhow, we would like to know is any single barrel ML pistol, with 10” barrel (max 12”), using BP only (no substitute) capable of taking boar up to 100 yds? What calibre and what would be right bullet? We think that just ball is not enough, too low sectional density and it will loose velocity fast. Some sort of longer bullet with greater sectional density, or one of those sabot bullets, look as much better choice. We occasionally shoot 300-325 gr bullets at about 1200 fps from Ruger 44 and 45 revolvers so we know what kind of power to expect on 100 yds, but we have know clue how ML pistol will work on that range. I searched this forum a bit, but I couldn’t find what I am looking for. We appreciate any info. Thanks, Onty.

The discontinued T/C Scout pistol is quite the sledgehammer with bore diameter conicals, especially in .54 caliber. http://www.gunbroker.com/Aucti...m.asp?Item=128961210 Otherwise if your state game laws permit it the Colt Walker is still the most powerful a cap and ball revolver ever made. http://www.trackofthewolf.com/...=291&partNum=AAH-117

Did they make it in any other calibre? Would you please have any info what kind of bullet and weight is the most appropriate for long ranges for 54, or any other calibre available for this pistol, and what would be muzzle velocity? Any reloading data?
How about using one of those 260-300 gr bullets used for 45 Colt in Walker? What kind of velocity we could expect with those bullets? Of course, assuming that ramming arm is secured so it would not tie cylinder. Any loading data for this revolver? Also, I have TC-Contender frame, is any ML barrel available for it, assuming I can use one of centrefire primers, like 209 for shotgun. Thanks

The Scout was made in .45, .50, and .54 caliber. Sam Fadala wrote it up in great detail in his Blackpowder manual. I've never worked with the Colt Walker but there are conical bullet mold for it. Wiki has a write up on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walker_Colt There are custom 209 primed barrels for the Contender (and one supposes they could be made at hadgun lengths) but T/C makes their 209x45 and 209x50 barrels only for the newer G2.

Thanks again. As for Blackpowder manual, are you talking about Lyman one? Any other manual with lot of info you would recommend? Regards, Onty.

What about the Kahnke 82? It is the only muzzleloading pistol I know of that can shoot 1" groups at 100 yards. My .54cal will shoot 425gr Great Plains bullets 1400fps with the original recomended 90grs of FFF. The new guns come drilled and tapped for a scope mount. The .50 with a knight high pressure sabot and a Hornady 300gr .452 XTP will get 1300fps which is .44 mag power. These guns are awsome. reflex264 http://www.kahnkegunworks.net/prices.html

The one I had in mind was the 3rd Edition of his The Complete Black Powder Handbook http://www.amazon.com/Complete...d=1245609303&sr=1-5# There are other editions of course but this one discussed the Scout pistol in several chapters. Traditions used to make a similar single shot called the Buckhunter but the grip shape looked uncomfortable. They are still listed for sale with some outlets http://www.sportsmansguide.com.../cb/cb.aspx?a=264862 The Kahnke 82 looks interesting. Likewise White makes a full-power in-line pistol http://www.whitemuzzleloading.com/hunting_pistol.htm

The only drawback to shooting it with a 425 over 90grs is the recoil. Makes a un- ported .454 Casull feel like a cap gun. You can load it down for general shooting and it is pretty pleasant. reflex264

I bought a TC Scout in 54cal after looking for years. It shoots round balls and REAL bullets very accurately. At 25 yards I can put all of the balls in one ragged hole and the REAL bullets in 1 1/2" or less. This is done off a bench rest with the light and wind in favorable conditions. I use a .457 Conical made from a Lee mold in my Walker. It's a 220gr.conical and goes about 1100 fps. I've had this revolver for over 30 yrs and I like it.

So will a Ruger Old Army with the right conicals, if you aren't limited to single shots. Been there done that. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I have a Traditions Buckhunter Pro In-Line Pistol in 54 caliber that is more than capable at 100 yards. Fun gun to shoot too.

How is recoil with full power conicals? What sort of groups are you getting at 100?

Carried a Walker from age 18 to 21, never tried a bullet, always shot round ball. Give me a Walker and I'll kill anything in North America excepting maybe grizzly or Kodiak, and if I can get a shot in their mouth I'll kill them, too. My Walker shot a foot Low at 75 feet and less, 100 yards shouldn't be a problem, just tinker with bullets and loads. And ALWAYS put grease over the ball or bullets in the cylinder, I never did and had several Chain-Fires. Kind of... Awkward, to say the least. Also, the Factory loading lever retainer clip is BS, have a smith put a Remington-style loading lever catch on it. Fine-grained powder makes Walkers Crack like a .300 Winchester, coarse powder makes 'em Boom like a Sharps or an Ordnance Rifle. Recoil .45 Coltish with Max.( all you can stuff in 'em without whittling the ball down to clear the barrel) loads. Also, a single-shot .45 loaded with BB's will pretty well cover a 4x8 sheet of plywood at 30 feet or so. Handy snake gun. KY Jim
