Custom 20 ga black powder muzzle loader by Jim Turpin
Anyone familiar with Mr Turpin's (Overland Park, MO) work? This gun was made decades ago with a Getz barrel, Siler lock and a super piece of quilted "birds eye" Maple. Fore end and ram rod jag are ivory. It is in excellent condition. I have an interest in it. Thanks for any info. LDK

Look on some of the BP building sites or track of the wolf to get an idea on fair values. Tom Turpin is certainly not an unknown gunsmith. I would only value it a quality contemporary and go from there. There is a lot of work that goes into those guns, but I don't think the prices often reflect that very accurately. $1500-$2000 would be my guess.

Shoot straight, shoot often.

I bet your right Bill. I've gotten an estimate on building an identical gun and what the owner is selling it for is $2,500

If you like the gun you had better be buying it before it gets away. That gun is quality work and it would cost at least half that just to buy the parts and wood for it, and that's if you could find wood like that today at a good price!

For what it's worth, Jim Turpin, last I knew lived in Overland Park, Kansas instead of Missouri. He used to be a member of the Contemporary Longrifle Association. May still be. That rifle is still on their web site under him as the artisan.

I know nothing about muzzleloaders but I do know a little about wood. Quilted Birdseye Maple like that is rare! Simply beautiful.
