I used Black Powder in the past, but it was with a CVA rifle. The kind that would burn a patch to cinders no matter what you tried it had a very sorry excuse for rifling. I had one heck of a time getting the patched balls to go down after a few shots. Black Powder is not readily available since the only dedicated muzzle-loading shop (Four Flags) closed down. Since I have an accurate Traditional Style Black Powder rifle I might give it a try again. I put 5 shots in a group that measured 1.25 inches at 25yrds off a rest 4 of which were in one ragged hole. The 3rd shot blew my group but I am still happy with my progress. I am shooting 100grs Pyrodex RS with a .530 RB and fifteen thousandths pillow ticking patch (the stripped stuff). There were several shooters that couldnt believe that the smoke pole was actually hitting the target, but I showed them my group and informed them that what ever they may have been told that these muzzle-loaders can really shoot some tight group. Yes I am bragging but years of trying to get one of these sulfur belching smoke-poles to group will try anyones patience. I keep trying to get more converts to the muzzle-loader side.

I have a Lyman Deerstalker .54 with a flintlock. I sight mine in at 100 yards. That will put you just a tad high at 50 yards and a tad low at 125. I don't think you should be shooting anything farther out than that. With a patched round ball and 100 grains of fffg I can hit an 8 inch paper plate all day long.
