I ordered one CVA for a nephew and it looked excellent. Based on this one a couple buddies liked it. A few months later they wanted one too.
The last two CVA's I ordered looked like they had been rifled with a rock. So many burrs in the bore that fuzz would come out of the patches and stick in the bore. I sent the last one back to CVA and they said it was fine. Both were resold prior to shooting so I don't know how they grouped. These werent the Bergara barreled ones. I will not purchase another CVA product period.

Just my experience.

God Bless, Louis

I like the CVAs. I never had one that wouldn't shoot VERY well. I can't say that about the TC I owned. It was just harder to get to shoot well. Quality was fine, it just took some real hefty load development.

Custom built flintlocks; none of those new fangled in lines for me; those are really 30-06s in disguise. (No hate mail; I have one and have killed deer with it so I know how they work.)

I've had the Accura v2 for a couple of years and am constantly amazed at it's accuracy. Killed a moose last oct in B.C.--one shot, went nowhere. Do yourself a favor and just start with Blackhorn 209 powder and Thor bullets.--Bill

Around 20yrs ago a buddy insisted I get into the bp game. Not having much funding and no idea whether I'd like it or not. I got a cheap CVA from the Guide. Think it was $125. Grey Wolf .54.
It's shot real well and I'm pleased with it for the price.
It did have a problem leaking powder smoke around an ill fitting nipple. I sent the barrel back and they fixed it right away. Don't think it was two wks til I had it back. Warranty of course.

I couldn't see the front sight so I couldn't hit very well with it. Someone told me to paint the front sight white. That cured the problem. So I replaced it with a 3/32" white spot Williams. from then on I've been among the top 3-4 shooters in our 12-20 shooter bp match's once a month.

It has a hollow plastic stock and was quite muzzle heavy and whacked hell out of my cheek & recoil was bad. Gunsmith said to fill the butt with lead. My resin had hardened up so I ended up just jamming a pound lead ingot in it tempory. It's still that way. Now balanced in front of the trigger guard, weighs 8lbs. Cured the kicking and face busting real well.

Am sure I've shot it a couple thousand times so far. For anything other than match's I use the Lee REAL slugs and 100gr FFG. Patched balls and 40-60gr for the match's. It'll shoot better than I can offhand.

Testing accuracy I set the steel targets at 25yd intervals and shot off the bench learning the gun. I hit everyone first shot out to the 200meter Ram with the 300?gr REAL. Took me four shots to hit the ram, two more for the second shot. It's just too far for the bullet I feel. I found lead disks big as a silver dollar and that was with hard cast slugs too. So it's got plenty of impact even at 200meters to kill game with. Though I'd never shoot over 100yds at game just to be sure. I haven't hunted with it yet. Do hope to use it for muley's one day.

The reason for the hard cast. I never gave a thought to not being able to push 'em down the bore. I just cast up a 3# coffee can full. Too many to remelt. I had the muzzle relief bored so they'll go in and I can push them down now. Worked out quite well. They don't lead the bore either. Same lead I use for pistol bullets. I know pure or soft lead would be better and will use it next time I cast some up for it. These are fine for plinking and playing with til they're used up.

I don't like the looks of TC's stocks so I'd never buy one solely for that reason regardless of quality.

I have owned a CVA optima for many years now and will honestly say at 200 yards in a led sled I can make my bullets touch on paper using 250 grain hornady sst bullets.

dpcd,

I agree, I have a great .54 cal flintlock by Lew Robinson in Texas. Iron sights, so I limit shots to less than 70-80 yards. Having said that, I've taken 4 deer with a T/C Endore, .50 cal, one a 176 lb 10pt. I did a Mike Belmn trigger job, spent plenty of time messing with powder quantities/sabot/bullet combinations until the gun shot just under an inch at 100 yds from the bench, so no problems there. Headed to Montana, so I traded it for a nice side by side 28 ga shotgun (already had my .30-06).

I have no experience with the CVA firearms, so cannot comment on the quality or accuracy of these firearms.

So after all that rambling, I'd recommend you get what you like, and spend some time to get to know the gun and what it likes for sabot/bullet/powder combinations. It will be time well spent.

Good Luck with your search.

Lee and others:
Out here in CO we can't use sabots for hunting
anything. Have to use full bore size whether slugs or balls.
No scopes and last I read the regs, no primers either. Just M/L caps or flints.

I am in the same boat as well, I joined a lease in TN and they have a nice ML season prior to rifle season. My friends all shoot CVA's and that is what they told me to go with. Have not bought one yet. Hopefully shortly, however, I am curious as to the bullet/powder combos any and everyone is running? Thanks, and don't mean to hijack the thread.
