I have a CVA ST. Louis Hawken and would like to put a Marbles Folding Tang sight on it. Is this a doable project or am I a half bubble off plumb to even consider this project? I would like to shoot at long range, I said shoot, not hunt. Problem is I'm 70+ years old and eyesight isn't optimal anymore. I figured the tang sight would help. Im am fairly adept at using irons and they really don't bother me. I shoot a lot of pistol and my beloved M-1 with irons. Thanks for any help and advice. Best wishes, Bill I would appreciate any info you pros could provide.

Bill, While I applaud your desire, your gear might not be up to the chore. You didn't say what your cal was or the distance you want to shoot. Also are you going to shoot round ball or conical? I have three rifles set up to shoot long range. Mine are TC Renegades with Green Mountain barrels. I am using Lyman 57 SML peep sights and on this rifle I have a Lee Shavers globe sight with a level. On this rifle the Lyman peep will adjust out to at least 400 yards. I have shot it quite a bit at 300 yards and I have plenty of elevation left. I have fast twist barrels on all three guns. The two 50's have 1-28 twist, and the 45 in the picture has a 1-18 twist. I can use any conical I want with the 45. The only problem is sight elevation with super heavy bullets. This is just a thought. If you look around you can get lucky and get a TC Hawken or a TC renegade for under 200 dollars. In some places these guns with poor quality barrels can be had for as little as 50 to 100 dollars. Once you get the stock and lock, the barrel from Green Mountain is a drop in Long Range Hunter. You can get one for under 200 dollars most of the time in 50 cal with 1-28 twist. You can put on a Lyman 57 SML for about 75 dollars and a Lee Shavers globe sight with a level will set you back about 90 dollars. You could also put a vernier tangsight on the TC. You can get them through cabalas for about 80 dollars I think. My 50's shoot the Hornady great plains bullets very well. I can shoot under 2" groups at 100 yards easy. I have shot 10 groups that average 1.25" at 100 yards. My best group was .42" at 100 yards. I have been paper patching some 500 SW bullets that are 450 gr. These bullets are starting to show some real good results. They have a fairly high BC at .295 compaired to the Hornady at .205 The peep sight will help you see the sight a little clearer. Since you are only interested in targets I say go for it! Ron

To answer your question, the answer is yes. Putting a Marble tang sight on your hawkins is a doable project. Al Garden View Apiaries where the view is as sweet as the honey.

When you put a tang sight on a hooked breech rifle...if you pull the barrel for cleaning, does the point of impact change when you put it back together..??? Thanks, Don

No it has no affect on the point of impact. This rifle is glass bedded on the tang and the front 5" of the barrel. I also have two others that are not glass bedded and they do not move either. Ron
