Since this is a big game muzzeloading forum, I thought I would post the story of my last success. We were hunting the blackpowder season for elk in Colorado in Sept 2002. I shoot a Rem 700ML 54cal with Hornady Great Plains. Opening morning found me sitting under a pine tree watching my favorite beaver dam/elk crossing. It was about 7am and although a few cows and calves had crossed in shooting range, the bulls and a bunch of cows were making a ruckus on the top of the ridge opposite me about 600yds away. I tried a few spike bull calls and cow and calf calls and I could get them to answer but not come down. Finally, since it was getting late, I got out my hyper cow in heat call and though I've never been able to blow it very well, I gave it a toot. Suddenly cows started pooring down off the ridge toward me and after a few had gone by, a 5X5 came after them. When he got to the crossing about 75yds away I gave a cow call and he stopped broadside. I put the sights on his shoulder and fired. As the smoke cleared, he stood there hunched up and I knew that I had hit him well but too far back. I reloaded as quietly as possible with my hands shaking from adrenalin and waited. After about 15min, I could tell he was not going to go down so I started to quietly approach him although there was no cover between us. When I was about 50yds away, he looked like he might run off so I sat down and shot him in the shoulder. He started up the opposite ridge thru the sage brush and went down for good after about 150yds. Sorry I don't have any pictures, didn't get the digital until last Sept's safari. | ||
