Sabot for .458 bullets in a 54cal???
Lads,

I have numerous 458 cal bullets at 405gr. which I bought for my 45/70 Contender carbine. They provide serious "thump" on both ends.

I was thinking of using the bullet w/a sabot in the 54 Renegade if a specific sabot existed that would take the 458 bullet.

I know they make them for 44 cal, but is anyone aware of the 458/54 combo bullet/sabot??

I haven't had good luck w/lighter 44cal bullets sabotted in the 54, but am thinking a heavier bullet might work better.

Lads, your thoughts please.

Mike

I know that Harvester used to make a 54 cal/45 bullet sabot. Had good luck with them in a Rem 700ML with up to 100 gr Pyrodex, and they handled my .452 jacketed bullets as well as unsized cast ones which ranged from .454 to .458.

Mid South Shooters supply used to have the best prices but I haven't checked for a while. I gave the gun and all components to my hunting partner, but I can check and see if there were any other brands in the mix.

Thanks again,

would a sabot grip this small a diameter?

Buckeye,
Thought about that myself - but I have some sabots for 44cal bullets (0.429) which are even smaller. The petals on the sabot are pretty thick.
Haven't tried them w/the .458's yet. I think this might be too tight in the bore (could be a bugger trying to load). I've had to use a steel ram to get the 44's down the barrel. I could try some bore butter or such. Might be fun.

Wish me luck lads, I'll keep trying.

please post your findings. I have only used .500 diameter bullets in my .54 with sabots. I think hornady did offer sabots with .429 bullets at one time, maybe even now?

Lads,
I am now on a quest. One would think there would be some 54 cal sabots for a 458 bullet somewhere.

I will gird my loins, strap on my sword and venture forth into the wastelands (like Detroit and Cleveland BOOM) in search of those sabots!!!

Mike, use some talc because I think your loins will become chafed.

I believe they would have to be custom manufactured.

Mike,
first try might be cabela's in dundee, then the new bass pro in toledo on 75. My favorite shopping spot is Fin, fur and feather at I-71 and route 250 in Ashland. good luck!

I thought if any body had them it would be MMP>http://www.mmpsabots.com/.
Of course they might fit a little loose in the sabots I use in my 54 cal.

Purple Sabot 54 Caliber Rifle .499 .500 Diameter Bullets.

I use the Speer 300gr. 50 cal Gold Dot Hollow points

Like UC stated you are probably looking at a custom made sabot.

I found this article at chuckhawks, indicated MMp makes the sabot you need.

http://www.chuckhawks.com/mmp_sabots.htm

For some twenty years a gentleman by the name of Del Ramsey, who hails from Harrison Arkansas, has been quietly advancing the Art and Science of muzzleloading. Through his tireless, seldom heralded efforts, modern muzzleloaders are more accurate than otherwise possible, and are able to harvest big game animals faster and more humanely than ever before. In the last eight years alone, Del's polyethylene blends have gone through at least four major formulation upgrades, with most of his sophisticated sabots having been updated within the last six months alone.

It would be difficult to discern from a moment's glance at the Muzzleload Magnum Products site that the scope of the MMP sabot line is far, far bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Del Ramsey currently offers no less than 15 distinct sabots for .45 caliber projectiles, for use in .50 caliber muzzleloaders. That's just for starters. .40 caliber, .44 (.429) caliber, and .458" diameter bullets are well covered for .50 caliber use, along with even more sabots for .45 and .54 caliber muzzleloaders addressing a variety of bullet diameters, lengths, styles, and materials.

But Del does not make it for the 54 cal any longer.
I checked out the site yesterday.

Lads,

Thanks again for your efforts on my behalf!!

I should have asked earlier homer is there a more in-depth site which deals perhaps with ML only?? Not that I don't value this site!! I tried one and found out it was for "serious buckskinners only". They took umbrage at my questions about sabots, too modern... Luddites!!

Oh well, I'll persevere!!

shotgun wads? paper (duct tape) patched, use .451 cups, use .500 cups ..

ducttape patching DOES WORK in cannons -- no, real cannons...

how about blue painters tape? actually, I would use "frog" tape, same thing, better glue...

Blank!!!

Just ordered!! And of course, being a curious lad, I checked out and ordered a few other items without which, life wouldn't be worth living!

I surely hope that anyone else looking for the odd part for their sport/firearm fares as well as I have.

Great responses from all - and again, my thanks.

Lets consider this thread closed. I will report on some bench tests after I fire a few rounds.
