I am thinking about buying a Lyman Great Plains Rifle kit to be a project for the upcoming southern hemisphere winter. I'm a first timer at this sort of thing - is it a good kit to start with?
Who has built one? What sort of finish did you go for? Browning barrels??! All new to me!
And was it straightforward enough to end up with a rifle that shot straight!

I've shot one that was built from a kit, it looked nice and while I did not shoot it enough to form an opinion it shot well enough at least for hunting accuracy.

As I am sure you are aware, it is more of an "assembling and finishing" endeavor than a "building" experience but if you take your time and pay attention to detail I am sure you will be happy with it.

It is a fairly easy kit to use. Good starter kit. The rifles shoot very well, mine will cloverleaf three shots at 100 yards. 90 grains of 3F with pillow ticking and Vaseline Intensive Care lotion for lube.

Working on one right now, mine is a older .45 cal kit that was bought many years ago and then just left in the box until I bought it about a month ago.

I was just thinking the same thing for a winter project.
My only question is where can I get a nicer stock for the GPR?
I'd really like a fancy maple.
I have a full stock fancy Flinchlock, now I want a nice percussion.
