I was just looking at their catalogue and saw the Huntsman and Sidekick models. What do you know about these? What's the deal with the primer holders? Are they reusable indefinatly, or can you only use them so many times? Thanks.

Go to greybeardsoutdoors, they have there very own section in the forum. I am sure they will be happy to answer your questions. They look like a nice gun...simple is best!

I own a 50 cal huntsman, also a 243 barrel for it. I do not like the breech plug or the ramrod. Other than that, it is a good gun for the money. Shoots really well. Remember, you are buying an inexpensive gun. Do not expect $6oo results. To answer your question on the primer holders, I am still using my originals and I shoot a lot.

I have the sidekick model, it does not accept other barrels but it is a magnum longer barrel and will take 150 gr loads. I love the thing shoots really well heck of a gun for the money, can't beat it. Ram rod is a little odd being that it is collapsable but not a problem. I highly suggest one. Mine would compete accuracy wise with any muzzleloader out there.

I've been trying to find the difference in these two as well. Is it just that the huntsman can have other barrels fitted, where the sidekick cannot? Otherwise, the specs for them are the same, as far as I can tell.

I was talking to our Range Master the other day and he said he'd been hunting w/ the Huntsman for years and that it was very accurate. He said he tought his had the reciever that only accepted shotgun barrels. H&R has two recievers and only one will accept centerfire so you'd have to put in a call to em' and see which one comes on the Huntsman.

I have a NEF in 45-70, and their web site only lists the huntsman barrel as a retrofit. The Sidekick must be a different configuration (dedicated muzzleloader), as it is available by mail order, etc. The huntsman rifle requires FFL paperwork - so I'd wager that the huntsman uses their standard rifle receiver and the sidekick does not. Also, I see that the sidekick is a magnum barrel, as tripleduece mentioned. The huntsman does not say that it is, so I can't say that it is suitable for 150 gr charges.

I think I'll get that huntsman barrel fitted to my receiver and ask them to touch up the trigger while it's in the shop. That way, I'll have a muzzleloader for maybe $100.

The Huntsman uses the SB1 receiver, which is the same as NEF/H&R's shotguns. The rifles use the SB2 receiver which is hardened for higher pressures.

The Sidekick is a slightly different receiver(not sure how), which is only available with the muzzleloader barrel.

If you have to track your animal, you aren't using a big enuff gun.
