How do you take your BP with you, IF you cannot get it there? I am told it is illegal to carry on an aircraft! AR

I haven't tried it myself, but I have heard of guys taking .45-70 or similar large cartridges, filling them with BP, seating bullets on top loosely, then pulling the bullets and using the powder after reaching their destination.

A federal violation costing up to $10,000 and missing a trip of a lifetime...not an option. I had my outfitter supply it.

Like kjjm4 said....A fellow hunter on one of mytrips took a Sharps 45/90, and Williamsburg Flintlock. He had loaded a number of "extra" 45/90 cartridges specifically to be opened in country to provide powder for the flintlock. That was "back-in-the-day" however..Waaay before we allowed a few islamic fanatics to change our lives forever. Not sure it's permissible today, just wanted to fill in that it's definitely been done that way in the past with no legal ramifications.

http://safetravel.dot.gov/index_ammunition.html I can't find anything there about black powder cartridges being a no-no. It just says no loose powder (black or smokeless), primers, or caps. I can't imagine any of the authorities caring what you do with the ammunition (such as disassembling it) once you arrive at your destination.

Nope, I was talking about sneeking loose powder or pellets. That's where you'll get yourself in trouble. The only hassle I can see with packing 45/70 loads to use the lose powder, is that for a lot of destinations, you'll have to lug a rifle of that caliber around with you and I guess, a bullet puller. No big deal, just not what I wanted to do when I went to Africa, solo.

I didn't think of there being a problem with the rifle/cartridges matching.

Don't mess around with this guys. It carries a $250,000 fine, loss of flying privileges, and up to 10 years in jail. You do need to have the gun to match the ammo in many countries- South Africa is one. I had the powder company ship me a tub to Namibia in March to a licensed dealer at a gun shop. It cost over $1000 to ship 20 oz. I have tried to find a legal way, and have not been able to. If anyone finds out how, please let me know. It is a major problem. there are a few gun shops in south africa that can supply goex black powder and pyrodex you can slo have it shipped ahead of time wich is what i suggest at least 6 months in advance to really make shure....this problem has been going on for quite some time i wonder when the african are gonna get off there ass and get some gun powder supplyers in country and write maybe a few lines of law in there books but iv never known african politians to actully want to do anything other than collect pay and go home. youd figure theres more than enuff bp hunters to actully team together petition the goverments on both sides of the pond and get this worked out...guess not.
