Been a while since I've messed with a muzzle loader and this time I want to build or put one together myself. Who makes the best kit(percusion style)rifle? I would like to use round balls, but will be okay maxi hunters. Thanks guys. "If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' someone else's dog around" unknown cowboy

Depends on your skill level and budget, but the best kits on the market are Jim Chambers.

Did you have a particular budget in mind? Do you want a kit with an inletted stock? for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

My budget is 500.00 and under, and I am mechanically inclined but have limited wood working skill. Mark not sure what an inletted stock is? I was hoping to find something I could stain the stock, maybe reshape it a little to suit me. I think a kit is what I am wanting. The gun will be used for hunting deer and would like it to be accurate enough with iron sights out to 100 yards give or take a few. In the past I used a lyman deerstalker and a knight in line. Never got a shot with the lyman but took a few animals with the in line. Thanks for the help. In the past I've done Traditions and Pedersoli kits. Both of them are in your price range. They come with the wood inletting nearly finished, and the metal in the white.

You just described the Lyman Great Plains Rifle Kit. They are very well made and have a 1:60 twist rate specifically for round balls. Every one I've seen has beautiful wood and are left a little big in the wrist and stock so that you can shape it to fit. They are very accurate and come in well under your $500 budget with enough left over to get all the accessories that you will need. We were required to build one as a project in gunsmithing school and without exception every one turned out beautifully. You didn't mention a caliber preference but I would go with the .54 caliber.

I like the Lyman GPR. The price is right and quality good. Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.
