Black Powder loads in an Omega

I have an Omega 50 that I have been using 777 and Hornady SST bullets out of with good results. 250's shoot slightly better than the 300's but I'm only shooting white tails so the 250's are just fine.

Has anyone out there shot the SST's or Shockwave's (or anything similar) using regular black powder? What kind of results have you gotten with this?

Thanks.

thats wierd since the rate of twist was designed to shoot the 300 better and the 3 omeags iv owened and the 15+ that iv sited in all prefer the 300 sst and xtp mag to the 250 any day of the week.

I've also heard the 300's are better for most, just all the groups I've shot have been more consitent with the 250's. I've shot some great groups with both, but given the choice, for a deer hunt right now, I'd go with the 250's. Maybe its just me, maybe the rifle is just an odd one.

My best load combo so far is the 250 SST, Harvester short sabot, and 130 777 in pellets.

Ever try any black powder out of any of yours?

Why would you want to put that stinky, dirty, & smokey stuff in your Omega? Big Grin

Must like the smell.

Just curious, wanted to see if anyone else had good results before I tried it. I have a pound or two sitting around.

I tried my luck with a flinter for a few years, roundballs, and real black powder.....what a pain in the tail.

I know, the traditional guys are going to flame me now for this blasphemy.....

I have shot FFFg black in my White Whitetail Ultra Mag and my Super 91, and both shot that as well as they did the 777 or Pyrodex P.

And despite the rep of being hard to clean, a citrus-based spray bought off the shelf in a grocery store easily cleaned the rifles after shooting black.

Pick a powder, black or substitute, and go for it. Work up your load and stop at 130 grains vol. equivalent of 777 (if you need to go that high). I am told it is ~15% faster than black, but 100 vol equiv. shoots extremely well in my Whites. Never saw any need to go any higher.

The Omega will shoot 180-400 gr sabot/bullets MOA @ 100 yards & beyond with a little powder/primer tweaking. Shoots the 40-cal bullets (180-240) just as well as the 45 cal 230-400)long distance. The 44-cal bullets are more finicky... generally work better with less powder (70-85 grains).. otherwise flyers may occur. I do much better at the range using green MMP sabots in 44-cal than Harvester sabots. With 45-cal, just the opposite effect. Harvester plastic sabots seem to load easier & provide just a pinch better accuracy than MMP HPH-12 or 24 thicknesses.
