What you have to do to understand the state of the United States is look at the "why". We had somewhat effective Laws that limited how much any person could spend to affect an election until a Republican majority on the Supreme Court decided, from thin air because nothing in the Constitution remotely hints at it, that "money equals speech" and most limits are therefore unconstitutional, so an American's voice is as big and loud as their bank account. An absolute perversion of "free speech" designed and intended to help Republicans and their corporate masters. Similarly, a Republican Court decided that, despite not being subject to the draft or being eligible to vote, "corporations are persons" and entitled to Constitutional rights, again without a single suggestion to that effect being in the Constitution or any of the discussions around it's drafting.

We all remember their ruling in "Bush v Gore" that Bush the Lesser would suffer irreparable harm if all the votes in Florida were counted, but that their decision had no value as precedent, which is supposed to be their primary function.

To be honest I'm not entirely sure that shit stank before Republicans cheated their way to a Supreme Court majority.
