Around 1980, I approached a fellow who ran a Lichtenstein trust with a manufacturing proposition.
I was designing resistor/capacitor networks at the time, a subset of thick film hybrid circuit design I did before that.

He told me there was no money in manufacturing and his investors would not be interested.

I took a job in the same business awhile later. It was moved to Singapore not long after that.

I took another job in the same business. It was moved to China not long after that.

Resistor networks are still being made somewhere but have been largely supplanted by chip resistors and pick/place machines. My knowledge in that field is no longer needed.

Guys here with pick/place machines rely largely on assemblies that are only made in the US for various reasons. Most of the machines are offshore.

Last job was writing machine control code for medical centrifuges. Company was bought out three times, engineering was moved to Germany last time. They wanted the high-value-added jobs for there. The rest was moved to cheaper areas of the USA.

I had gone freelance after the first of those three buyouts, and never looked back.
