It’s All About Owning The Libs Now
How can Democrats fight back against MAGA Trump nihilism?
The Big Picture and Todd Beeton
Feb 18, 2025

(excerpt)

The last Congress, led by a dysfunctional Republican House majority, was among the least productive in history. Which is by design.

The Republican Party has learned over the years that blocking the progress of a Democratic administration (and in this case, a Senate majority), and the policy priorities of the left more broadly, are the keys to electoral success with their MAGA base. And certainly, that was proven true once again in 2024 when voters returned them to the majority, albeit barely. The incentives for Republicans are clear.

But this is not your usual Republican obstructionism. This is Trump’s Republican Party, one fueled by opposition to whatever the left supports, just for the sake of it, and the embrace of all that the left detests.

This politics of spite has been an undercurrent of the Republican Party for decades but has taken on new life under Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who see power as a retaliatory tool to exact vengeance against the left, driven as they are by long-held grievances.

The Republican Party is no longer a means for passing conservative policy. It is a permanent opposition party, persistently opposing progress by Democrats and tearing down the institutions the left has built.

In the face of such nihilistic governance, where tearing down the left’s norms and institutions is an end justified by any and all means, no matter who is harmed...

One of Donald Trump’s—and the right’s more broadly—favorite tactics is to “own the libs,” which takes many forms...

===============================================

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owning_the_libs

"Owning the libs" is a political strategy used by some conservatives in the United States that focuses on offending the American liberals in order to appear dominant. Users of the strategy emphasize and expand upon culture war issues intended to be divisive to provoke a reaction in others, much akin to internet trolling.

Wikipedia:

Political nihilism is the position holding no political goals whatsoever, except for the complete destruction of all existing political institutions—along with the principles, values, and social institutions that uphold them.[130] Though often related to anarchism, it may differ in that it presents no method of social organisation after a negation of the current political structure has taken place. An analysis of political nihilism is further presented by Leo Strauss.[131]

Let them destroy the government safety net.

Red states are the poor ones and the stupid fucks who voted for Trump and getting it up the ass.

I'm hearing from many of my neighbors who voted for him how dare he cut $ to Texas.

What did these idiots think? He's only doing what he promised.

What Democrats need to do is fight for the American People; if elections are allowed in 2026, which I am doubtful of, the Republicans will go down in a bloodbath and Trump can set a new record by being impeached a third time and removed.

"How far will the go?"

All the way if you let them, ie Hitler, Putin.

The further the go the harder they are to stop.
The real question in the USA is,
"Is it too late now? Have they already gone past the point of no return?"

Is the real challenge people like Trump and Musk or is it the willful ignorant citizen that supports them? Brian

Those are good and relevant questions, Brian.

I can't predict "Have they already gone past the point of no return?"

That depends on, "Is the real challenge people like Trump and Musk or is it the willful ignorant citizen that supports them?"

Of course this couldn't be happening without support, either explicit, complicit, willful ignorance, etc.

As we can see herein, there are several participants who self-ID as conservative. Some are fence straddlers which has damaged their balls. Some are sensible and have spoken out opposing what's happening. My hope is that the participants herein, the ratio, is representative on a broad scale.

This whole thing is out-of-the-box. Since it is so obvious, it is possible that the nation could turn on Trumpism and go for the liberal view of how it ought to be.

But this far-right ideology didn't happen suddenly. It fomented for years. It will never go away, but it might defeat itself out of sheer obtuseness.

See my next post for some yesteryear stuff on how we got here.

I know many herein don't have the will or patience to read a long article.

I can't do much about that.

Sometimes it takes a bit of reading to understand what's happening. I figure most of us want to have perspective on what's happening, aren't rigid in preconceptions. I hope I'm correct about that, but will go on the idea anyway.

So, to get perspective on today I think it's useful to review yesteryear somewhat.

I think the rise of Republican Nihilism goes back more than 50 years, but here's an article published 12/21/2009:

The Rise of Republican Nihilism

https://newrepublic.com/articl...-republican-nihilism

What happened to all those GOP ideas?
Does the Republican Party have any ideas? The query may have a familiar ring.

To me this is difficult reading material.

So, I'll try to make it easier for you.

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) is often called the father of nihilism.

Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Nietzsche#

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche[ii] (15 October 1844 – 25 August 1900) was a German philologist, philosopher, poet, cultural critic and composer who became one of the most influential of all modern thinkers.[14]

Critique of mass culture
Friedrich Nietzsche held a pessimistic view of modern society and culture. He believed that the press and mass culture led to conformity and brought about mediocrity, and that the lack of intellectual progress was leading to the decline of the human species. In his opinion, some people would be able to become superior individuals through the use of willpower. By rising above mass culture, those persons would produce higher, brighter, and healthier human beings.[216]

Nihilism and the Liberal Vision of the Good
Matthew McManus
27 Sep 2021 — 12 min read

Excerpt from the thesis:

As Nietzsche put it, in Twilight of the Idols:

Liberal institutions cease to be liberal as soon as they are attained: later on, there are no worse and no more thorough injurers of freedom than liberal institutions. Their effects are known well enough: they undermine the will to power; they level mountain and valley, and call that morality; they make men small, cowardly, and hedonistic — every time it is the herd animal that triumphs with them. Liberalism: in other words, herd-animalization … Freedom means that the manly instincts which delight in war and victory dominate over other instincts, for example, over those of “pleasure.” The human being who has become free — and how much more the spirit who has become free — spits on the contemptible type of well-being dreamed of by shopkeepers, Christians, cows, females, Englishmen, and other democrats.

The free man is a warrior. How is freedom measured in individuals and peoples? According to the resistance which must be overcome, according to the exertion required, to remain on top. The highest type of free men should be sought where the highest resistance is constantly overcome: five steps from tyranny, close to the threshold of the danger of servitude.

================================================

Does any of that seem familiar in the republican creed/ethos of today?

In this thread I'm going to show examples of political nihilism.

Like this one extracted from a different thread. It sums up a lot.

Do we really want that war to continue for years?

They want the exact opposite of every Trump action. They want the war to continue. They want the government spending to continue, they want the fraud to continue, they want the waste and abuse to continue.

They want men in girls locker-rooms, they want an open border.

As I stated in another thread, Trump has occupied every single "common sense issue" and owns them. The Democrat party only has "not-Trump" positions and is looking extremely foolish.

You don't need to like the man, to like what he's doing. Heck, even Frank Luntz stated that on CNN, Democrats like Trumps velocity of change. I'm looking for the video because I always bring receipts. Big Grin

Backlash is not an insignificant phenomenon in politics.

For now, it's a contest between whiplash and imminent backlash.

We thought we knew the Far Right had self-constraint, based in patriotism, since they claimed it.

The far-right presumed (lied) that the left had no such constraints, and justified reciprocal actions.

So, therein is the difference in claims and actions.

Trump abandoning allies is bad.

I’m not sure I’d call Ukraine an ally, and foreign policy is the purview of the president.

Am I unhappy with some things Trump is doing? Yes. Did anyone do anything when I was upset with Biden? No. So what is my annoyance about Trump and his motormouth re Canada or that I think that we should support Ukraine at some level have to do with it?

The MAGA types are going to point out I’m a RINO or some such since I didn’t vote for the guy.

He is the president and if he is pursuing a policy I agree with, I am willing to say so, but one also needs realize that no one is going to agree 100%.

Your (on the left) going on about everything Trump and folks like ME attributing all evil to the political right is part of why we have Trump as president. You all couldn’t see him winning and put up a doddering old man, who when it became obvious of his unfitness you switched on the fly to a person who’s only qualification was that she happened to be VP.

Carvill is noting the absolute ineptitude of the Democrat response and despite that the left- you included- is throwing everything including the kitchen sink at the wall and hoping something sticks.

I get that Trump is doing so much that the opposition hates all of it, but until something sticks or Trump massively missteps, you are sounding like the meme chatacature of the crazy cat woman.

What do you expect me to do with my relative disagreement with Trump’s foreign policy re Russia and Ukraine, my substantial dislike of his tone with Canada, my essential agreement in principle re Mexico and South America, substantial agreement re China, and dislike of his tone with our NATO allies while agreeing that they need to substantially step up in their contributions to the common defense.

While I can see some of the European points, I also agree that whoever is footing the bill gets to order at the restaurant.

Nute commented that he likes the lack of Western European wars. Well, I do also, but as it’s Europe’s death and dying, they need to not tell us what we should spend our money and treasure on.

Umm Doc, you left out one essential part of the equation, when we needed our allies in Iraq and Afghanistan, they were there for us, fought beside us and supported us. Now that they have an aggressor on Europe, Trump has chosen Putin over our NATO allies. A disgusting betrayal that cannot be justified, like much of his behavior. See the attempted theft of the 2020 election for more examples.

It's too late for that. He has the support of GOPers in congress, and the power of office, and perhaps SCOTUS, and a running streak of successful lawfare, and the voters' approval that got him elected.

A shift in voter approval means practically nothing at this point. It may matter at mid-terms, but a lot of damage will happen till then.

Most of the damage he's doing can't be corrected short term.

We didn't need our allies in Iraq or Afghanistan, we could have easily squashed both like bugs as Israel has done in Gaza. Our Allies were duped into some retarded multi national "introduction of democracy" and all of us look the worse for doing so. I doubt my United States has learned its lessons there, but hopefully next time around when we ask, our allies will reply, "fuck that and fuck you!.

As for Europe and Vlad, who is this "aggressor on Europe " you speak of? It certainly isn't Vlad. Given his demonstration in Ukraine, I seriously doubt he could retake Chechnya. Lithuania is firmly out of reach.

Should we be holding grudges against Japan and Germany also? There are definitely still some from both nations that were alive in 1944. Evil Hitler Youth!
I don't like Vlad, feel no attraction nor do I have any respect, nor do I feel any particular fear. As we've agreed many, many times the nuclear arsenal makes anyones upper lip a bit sweaty, but Vlads aircraft carrier just plain don't work and his jet fighters need to use a Cabela's gps to find their way home. The certainty of an intercontinental missle seems fragile.

And Ukraine?!?!?!?! I'm all upset about Ukraine just a tad more than I am about Rwanda and Burma. If we need to fully invest in and support Ukraine then I say we also bury ourselves chin deep in Malawi or Ecuador.

There were 600,000 men, women and children Tutsi murdered in 1994 in Rwanda, just 30 years ago. Why isn't the United States fully involved there bringing those killers to justice

The 1970s have been over for some time my friend.

We are FAR weaker standing alone than with our allies my friend. Trump has left us out in the cold. Peace in Europe matters here in the States, even in Dillingham. Have you notice that both Japan and Germany have been trying to take over other countries in the last 80 years? That would be the big difference between them and Russia.

Trump's foreign policy is a HUGE mistake my friend, the biggest of the post war period. We have just lost the trust of ALL of our allies. Let that sink in a bit Scott....
