I didn't have to poll my friends. Here in rural America I'd say it is 90% conservative voting. That includes my female, male, lbgt friends. Oh, and my Amish neighbors. All farmers and ranchers, small town small business owners. People overall were tired of the poor economy for the past four plus years. They saw there would be no change by keeping the same regime. They also saw low wage, under the table, paid illegals by the millions weren't going to help the bottom line either. Using taxpayer money to feed, house, care and educate them was too much to stomach when most of the middle class is struggling with the costs of basic necessities. I do have many hard core leftist friends. They were very excited by the prospect of govt/taxpayer back breaking taxes to pay off their kids' student loans and abortion on demand. What struck me is all of them was the lack of understanding that govt pays for things with money taken from citizens and primarily from their paychecks. I reminded one friend who loudly protested the cost of sending her daughter to college that she agreed to pay their fees. Once people STOP paying outrageous tuition costs then maybe things will change. Making the rest of us pay for others desires only encourage higher prices further. Didn't make a bit of difference. All she could see was what it cost her. None of them ever spouted alternatives to abortions with things like temporary sterilizations, keeping pants zipped up, or paying for birth control. There are better ways for sure. And before anyone starts shouting, I have stated my opinion on the issue. I think there is a clear need for some abortions. Obviously for medical reasons and the rape and incest situation. No one should ever be allowed to suffer and die for lack of a medical procedure that could save them. Honestly, if they die then that baby is going with them. Abortion should never be for the go-to for birth control nor should any taxpayer ever have to pay for them. I know human tissue sales is very much a part of the reason leftists want abortions. They want the tissue. It is a dark and common practice. No different than getting guns to criminals. Where there is a will (and money), there is a way. As a culture and species, we have a long way to go with better solutions to unwanted pregnancies. Both males and females should be just as responsible, not just dumping it on the women with abortion. ~Ann | |||

There is a tiresome lot of fancy explanations for the outcome of a tiresome election between two not-very-popular candidates. The bottom line may not be fancy at all. The minutiae of voting is interesting, but when both candidates are staking out ideologically pure positions for their bases, the middle ground voters can't be taken for granted. I idly wonder how many stayed home, or just went to work and off to a tavern afterwards... TomP Our country, right or wrong. When right, to be kept right, when wrong to be put right.
