Confusing. School was never free. My teachers had control over how I dressed, my hairstyle, and always what I said. But. This is a principle with either no spine, or no intelligence. The judge has ruled not on the kids actions, which Im guessing he wouldn't punish. But on the schools wider right to control how students act. I read about a study lately where for the first time young people are reporting an increase in happiness as they leave school and enter young adult hood, where usually it decreases. Its no wonder when in childhood they are presented with such frivolous and unnecessary worries.

Well I went to Catholic schools and if I said anything the nuns didn't like in elementary or the brothers didn't like I was going to get hit, either by a ruler from the nuns or a fist or open hand by the brothers. But I hit a brother back and that changed the equation. Was amazed I wasn't expelled. A child has a right to independent thought in my opinion. And when Black Lives Matter was popular, there was a significant movement to change the narrative to "All Lives Matter", which seems reasonable, but we were told that that statement in and of itself was racist. The only way that could be true, is if Black Lives mattered more than everyone else's, which is itself racist -- OMG -- it's the liberals who are racists.

I didn't go to Catholic school but they hit us too if we misbehaved. With paddles. The vice-principal at my high school had a paddle with holes drilled in it. He said it lessened the wind resistance. My PE teacher, who was the football coach too, would give you a choice if he caught you fucking up. A lick or a trip to the office. I thought it was fair. You took the lick. He carried the damn club he hit you with all the time, all during PE class. It also had holes drilled in it. Truly, looking back on it....them hitting us with sticks to get compliance hardly seems right. But, it worked, that is for damn sure. In the office, you risked getting suspended or put in detention for several days. We all knew that and didn't want it. Coach was one of the few teachers that gave you a choice. Take the lick and walk away. I mean, he had to do something. I'll never forget Coach Satcher. He was a good dude. -Every damn thing is your own fault if you are any good.

Similar in my schooling. We learned that actions have consequences. DRSS Kreighoff 470 NE Valmet 412 30/06 & 9.3x74R

My point was I don't think a 7 year old child should be punished for thinking for herself unless it was disruptive and only in this bizarre world could that be thought of as disruptive. Just a point for discussion.

Mike, Your story brings back memories.I was in junior high and high school in the 70's in rural southern Illinois. Same set up, paddles with holes drilled in them.If you talked crap, got in fights, whatever, you got your ass whooped and sat in the hall in front of the principal's office at recess.Spent many a recess there sitting on my sore ass, usually for fighting. Here's the funny part. I was pretty good with the saxophone and was going to state competition and needed a piano accompanist. My band teacher gave me an address and I got dropped off for my first practice. Went up knocked on the door and there I stood, long haired country kid holding my sax case. The door opens and there stands that flat top wearing, block headed, mean son of bitch principal Mr Butler. We both stared at each other for few seconds, thinking the same thing, what the hell are you doing here, then he smiled and invited me in and introduced me to his college aged daughter the pianist. I had quite a few practice sessions and visits with the Butlers and I went to state comps with his daughter playing piano and took 1st place. In the end similar to you and your situation, I ended up with respect for Mr Butler and thought he was fair and good dude. But damn he would open up a can of whoop ass with that paddle. As to the 7 year apologizing, hell no. I would not tolerate that woke bullshit and raising my 4 kids we had several instances and fought back tooth and nail. People have to stand strong against this BS. Scott
