I think it's important to understand the difference in Machiavellianism as it pertains to psychology and politics.

From what I've read the term as it applies to politics has been in use for a long time. Only recently has it been applied by psychiatrists to personality traits more generally.

The differences seem to me to be that Machiavelli described and analyzed something in power politics that isn't necessarily bad. He just described how it is.

But in personality traits, when it becomes part of the Dark Triad, that's when it becomes dangerous especially in a leader.

Looks at the voting maps. All the Rural areas are predominantly red along with SD and IIRC OC.

That's an interesting post.

Cunning and charisma are two traits. Cunning, low or high is still cunning.

And the comparison you made is sort of amusing, and true, but the point I'm trying to make is not a comparison to Machiavelli, the man, but instead I'm saying that the techniques he described are what Trump utilizes.

I hope you see the difference.

I doubt that Trump has read The Prince or any of Machiavelli's books, much less studied them. That's not necessary for Trump to develop the traits into skill. What Machiavelli described is a winning formula for those few people who have the natural instincts of human nature for seeking and attaining power. Manipulation is the more appropriate word vs leadership, subject to subjective interpretations. One doesn't need to be as smart as Machiavelli but must be driven, far more so than the average person.

Driven by what?

No question that a person is driven by the traits of the Dark Triad personality, when they exist, defined as combo of narcissism, Machiavellianism and Psychopathy. Sadism and paranoia are to some degree relevant too. I think Trump is a perfect example.
