trump on Putin meeting: "It's like chess."
Something did come out of it to Putin’s favor.

President Trump has abandoned prior position and Ukraine’s prior position that a cease fire be in place.

Putin will be returning to Moscow with a smile on his face. For the second time in two weeks, Putin achieved his tactical objective of avoiding “severe consequences” from the United States for his refusal to end the shooting in Ukraine. Trump had set a hard deadline of August 8 for Putin to accept a ceasefire. But playing off Putin’s meeting with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on August 6, Trump pushed for a meeting instead, and the deadline lapsed.

First, foremost and always remember that Trump is a bully. There are two people he can potentially bully here, Putin and Zelensky. There is no way Trump can bully Putin. He admires Putin. Putin undoubtedly has dirt on Trump. Putin is smarter than Trump. So in the end, Trump will fall back to bullying Zelensky. It's not that hard to predict.

Timothy Snyder: Trump has made Ukraine war 'longer and worse'

When shaking hands Putin sorta had that "I got you by the short hairs" grin on his smush.

Given that there's probably a better than average chance that Putin has some kind of dirt/leverage on trump, WTF made him think that he could end that conflict/war in 24 hours? What kind of leverage did he think that he had? Maybe he owes Russia so much money that Putin could call in the loans and turn trump into a bankrupt pauper. Then again I wouldn't have voted for him for that reason anyway. Even 24 minutes wouldn't have mattered.
