About 10 miles north of me has been decimated by a tornado. Local resource rallying points have asked us to stop providing emergency necessities that had been requested at this time. Why, because we have just swamped, flooded these stations with food, clothing, hygiene products, and requested necessities that for now such materials have damped the board. Of course, in a few days, these items shall be distributed and the stations will be able to process more. Good job South KY.

It’s nice to live in a place with a sense of community and social responsibility. I live in a small village about a hour outside of London. It is on a chalk stream river which once served a number of silk mills and later a large paper mill which made bank note paper and was a large local employer. Most of the buildings on the high street are 500+ years old and my local pub is a coaching inn first built in the 1400’s. As times have changed employment has left the village and many people commute to London, so you might think some of the sense of community might have been lost. I was involved in the local council for some years and it was lovely to see the number of people who came forward to help when needed. From delivering food and essentials to the vulnerable during Covid to providing support and accommodation to Ukrainian refugee family’s or just turning out to help keeping the footpaths tidy. It’s a nice community to be part of.

Bite: We are very much bedroom communities here. The largest employers are the local school systems. We have our problems. Some of those problems seem unanswerable, but this great need has been met with great grace. Great to hear of your experience. It brings calm to my mind.

Before insurance came about, we had a system in place. The two major losses were either a dhow sinking in bad weather, or a home getting burned down. The community always got together, and rebuild the house and replace the dhow. No questions asked. Our little society looked after its members.
