I live in a small village about a hour outside of London. It is on a chalk stream river which once served a number of silk mills and later a large paper mill which made bank note paper and was a large local employer. Most of the buildings on the high street are 500+ years old and my local pub is a coaching inn first built in the 1400’s.

As times have changed employment has left the village and many people commute to London, so you might think some of the sense of community might have been lost.

I was involved in the local council for some years and it was lovely to see the number of people who came forward to help when needed. From delivering food and essentials to the vulnerable during Covid to providing support and accommodation to Ukrainian refugee family’s or just turning out to help keeping the footpaths tidy. It’s a nice community to be part of.
