Everybody missed the forecast of massive rain. This includes The Weather Channel who get their own data. They appeared to be more focused on a minimal tropical depression off the SE coast.

From AI:

"The Weather Channel gets its forecast data from observational data collected by doppler radar, radiosondes, weather satellites, buoys, and other instruments1. They license their weather data from IBM5. While their data is fairly close to the National Weather Service (NWS), there may be slight differences in pressure and other elements2."

There are reports of cloud seeding just prior to the event. Here is a supporting link:

https://countylocalnews.com/20...seeding-controversy/

The real pressing question is why city and/or county council didn't have an adequate warning system. Here in SC we have sirens and cell alerts. Also, why didn't the camp officials monitor conditions and heed initial alerts posted 12 hrs. prior?

Probably true, but who knows? The most experienced meteorologist in the region took early retirement recently due to the DOGE cuts to the NOAA.

>>>Among those who left was Paul Yura, who had been the warning coordination meteorologist at the NWS's Austin/San Antonio office. Yura spent more than half of his 32-year career in the office and took an early retirement offer in April, KXAN reported.

According to the NWS, duties of a warning coordination meteorologist include acting as a liaison to public safety officials, including emergency managers, and providing government officials with information on severe weather.

The Austin/San Antonio Weather Forecast Office currently has at least six vacancies according to a list of staff members on its website.<<<

https://www.npr.org/2025/07/06...2C%20KXAN%20reported.

That said, I'm also seeing reporting indicating the the city of Kerrville considered a flood alarm/siren system a decade or so ago but decided against it.

The whole thing is just awful. Looks like the death toll is going to go over a 100 soon. Just a nightmare...for everybody but especially those parents who dropped their kids off at Camp Mystic for what should have been a week of summer fun and who are now identifying their children's bodies at the ME's office. Can't even imagine.

This certainly is a horrible event.

I thought that cell phones automatically alert you to warnings in your areas?

I had that on mine until I turned them off for excessive noise to signal ratio- getting woke up to a blaring loud alarm that is a yellow alert (kid supposedly taken by her dad) 4 counties away at 3 am was the final straw for me- but if I get in a flash flood, it’s on me because of that.

Is this something that is unique to us damnyankees or something?

No cell service in that area of the Hill Country. Not unusual.

The NWS office responsible for the area of this severe weather event says they were not only fully staffed, but had extra people on duty.

I've been flooded in several times at my place in barksdale, one time for three days due to severe road damage.

No cell coverage..... The worse time we didn't get even an inch of rain at the ranch but they got about 10 inches in rock springs which flooded hack berry creek.... The wife and I got stranded on RR335....it took two days to get out. Luckily there was another camp we could stay at and wait.

The hill country is beautiful, but it can get crazy in the canyons.

Just an idle thought, dams have become on of the whipping boys of the left, evil and destructive to the point that numerous ones have been removed. Would a series of dams on the Guadalupe river have mitigated or prevented this catastrophe? that's what we're doing here.

With this being a 100 year event, there is every possibility that the dams would have overflowed or been breached. If the spillways were inadequate or the reservoirs already full, who knows?
In general, flood control efforts work out OK, but there are no guarantees. You can spend a few billion on dams or simply avoid building on floodplains. Bill

We now know adequate alerts were issued that should have caused people to be vigilant. What about the responsibilities of the Camp owner(s)? You know, if I owned/operated a hospitality business housing a thousand young girls on the banks of a flood prone river, I would think I would have emergency plans. One of the 8–10-year-old girls reported she woke up when her mattrass floated off the top bunk! Were there no camp employees on night watch? Certainly, there had to be some sort of security 24 hrs. Where the hell were they? Was everyone asleep? They should have installed river level warning devices themselves.

I'm sure that the cutbacks helped improve the chances of predicting the event and maybe saving some lives. Right? I mean less weather forecasters is better, true? Unless hundreds of people die in a weather event. Then, maybe not so much.

Biden sent Kerr County 10 million. They chose not to spend it on a warning system, wasting it instead in the sheriff's dept. And only spent it at all because they didn't want to return the money for fear it would go to a blue state's needs. This isn't Ann making it up as she goes with tiny bits of propaganda, this is real journalism.
