If this was the plot of a cheesy made for TV film it wouldn't be believable.

Three siblings arguing about Christmas presents. Daughter in her 20's (and her baby) and her two teenage brothers aged 14 and 15.

In the middle of the argument one brother pulls his gun and shoots the sister dead, at which point other brother pulls his gun and shoots his brother (non fatal).

Anyone behaving like this has got to be mentally sub normal so why the hell are they all carrying guns?

Only in America ...

And the sad saga continues.

How many have we heard of similar stories?

A wrong order from McDonald and one gets shot.

Newsom cleans the streets for the Chink president, and leaves them full of homeless druggies afterwards.

Best part is he is on his way to being president!

A commie replacing a draft dodger!

How the hell did America degenerate into this??

You might be right.

But, could leftism have sprung up, because of rightism?

Or maybe the rightists who think that every man, woman and child in the US should have a handgun.

I can’t see why leftism would cause brothers to shoot sisters. Plenty of more “left” societies around the world don’t go shooting each other up daily. It’s the Americans answer to everything these days - whatever the problem, it’s the fault of the other side, either the left or the right, every time. No one can see beyond that knee jerk response.

You can tell yourself it’s leftism if it makes you feel better but the real answer is fuckwits with guns. Why is a 14 year old halfwit walking around with a gun. We are a socialist state by any definition of right leaning Americans. We seem to be able to function without shooting the shit out of each other daily.

When I looked on AP a few days ago they actually have a section headed “shootings”.

Nute, look at our leftist cities and the massive crime, etc. The rule of law is gone. This behavior is promoted in these places.

You forget America has always had lots of guns. People in the 50's were not shooting up, looting, destroying, etc.

And you may have threatened to get your dad's gun and shoot someone, but nobody actually did it. Oh how things have changed. A lot of it seems to be related to greed selfishness and MINE MINE MINE attitudes.

In 1950 there were 5 homicides per 100,000 Americans.

In 2023 it was just over 6.

In 1980 it was 10.4.

. . . typical of the simpleminded. They take a problem that is multifaceted in terms of causes, e.g., access to firearms, poverty, breakdown in families, polarization of society fueled by extremists on the left and right, etc. and try to attach a simple one-word label to it. It makes them feel better and allows them to ignore their own role in helping to create the environment that results in such events.

Of course, in the U.K. the rate was 1 per 100,000.

Austria, Australia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain and Switzerland all failed to get to 1 per, the pikers.

France, over-run with all those knife-wielding Muslim immigrants, had 1.1 per, same as Sweden.

The US homicide rate per 100,000 of population is 6.4
The UK is 1.1
Sweden is 1.1
UAE is 0.5
Netherlands is 0.8
France is 1.1
Germany is 0.8
Finland is 1.2

You seeing theme here ?

Angola 4.1
Ethiopia 8.6

Mongolia 6.2
Yemen 6.3
Zimbabwe 6.7
Russia 6.8

Which group of countries would you expect a civilised society to be in?

If you think its a people problem ... Confused

Probably finding the bodies generated during lockdown.

Some they won't find for years...

It depends what figures you include. The UK is made up of 4 countries, the British isles is something different as is Great Britain on which of the 4 are included. Each has a slightly different rate/000 but they are all around 1.0- 1.1 ish.

There were mass shootings 60 years ago, granted not as many.

You may be right about cites etc but lots of places have big cities and in the main they are run by left leaning administrations. They don't all have people shooting each other at the drop of a hat.

Several countries in Europe have higher rates of gun ownership than Switzerland - Austria, Finland, Norway and poss one or two others.

Given that our homicide rate is 6.4, and roughly 60% of our homicides are by gun (and homicide includes suicide here, as we don’t have medically assisted suicide- that undoubtedly reduces your numbers since those are removed from the stats)

We still, using these numbers, (which may not necessarily be comparable) have a higher homicide rate than Europe excluding guns.

Given that gun availability in Europe doesn’t seem to correlate with individual states homicide rates, I’m not so sure that this is simply “availability of guns” causing homicide rate increases. While I don’t doubt it has something to do with choices, and that as a firearm is easier to be lethal with, I’m sure it does contribute to the rate somewhat, but most of the third world has higher rates and much less firearm availability than even Europe.

It’s not just guns; it’s more complex than that… but yes, the availability of weapons makes our criminal class more lethal to some degree.

There are crazies out there. It's worse than it used to be. The knowledge of it worries me. So, I usually carry, although that's not guarantee. It just makes me feel better.

But, the trouble to ensue, if I use it, could be devastating in several ways.

I remember when I was in high school it was common for the local farm boys to have rifles or shotguns visible on a gun rack in their pickup, parked in the school parking lot.

That was short lived and definitely yesteryear.

Honestly, I’m not sure. There is an increasing knife crime/stabbing prevalence amongst young people, or so it seems from the news but I’m not sure that accounts for it. With relatively low numbers to start with even an additional handful bumps the figures up.

We don’t have assisted suicide here either, but I don’t know if suicide rates are included as homicide.
