I was a bit stunned at how little of any good he had to say about his birth nations characteristics and what drives the nation.

Practically all tech advancement wouldn’t have happened in Silicon Valley if it wasn’t for them!
Do you honestly expect any common sense, INTELLIGENCE, in people who have a fight in picking their rulers??

One citizen and one vote.
The folks in an urban area or white collar professionals are not more citizen, more worthy than their rural, trades educated counterparts. The inverse is also true.
I do not like calling trades, “blue collar” professionals less educated. They are not less educated. They are simply educated differently, different field.
Sadly, I do believe many as I see here are not instructed on the functioning of our government. A lot of bad myths and not a lot of legal understanding. In my highschool statewide curriculum US government was an AP elective.

Bobster10 years ago, I rented a house to a young fellow (late 20's) from India. A recent immigrant, he claimed he had just bought two convenience stores and a restaurant. He was moving from a northeastern state and was expecting his "wife" soon pending approval of her visa. My rental agreement included a maximum of two occupants and no illegal activities on the premises. From the start, I had to chase money every month. I checked on his listed businesses and confirmed that was what he was engaged in. Then, the complaints started. Neighbors started calling me with concerns about the large number of people at the house. Finally, a neighbor who also owns rental property, called and said he observed at least 10 people going and coming every morning and late at night. I made a surprise visit one morning and discovered 14 adults, including my renter in the house. All but himself were sleeping in sleeping bags on the floor. The house was filthy and the kitchen full of insects from open food containers None could speak English nor could produce a green card. I informed my renter he was in violation of the rental agreement. He was gone in 24 hrs. Turns out these folks were his "indentured servants" whom he used to staff his properties. All here illegally. This goes on all over the country.

I agree and I suspect it has a lot to do with the Indian caste system. The upper levels of the system have a lot of distain for anyone on the lower levels and thus treat them badly.

I suspect that much of northern India does not regard southern India as their own kind; I watched a high-level corporate manager who grew up there address a university student who grew up in the south once. It was not a comfortable interaction to see in an industrial environment.

NakihunterWhat the world does not understand is that the British corrupted a social system into what has become an abomination in many parts (mostly but not exclusively rural) of India. The current "Caste" system is a product of British administrative policy and tactics.
The "divide and rule" policy always had a minority group dominate the majority and perpetuate a social conflict that would never be focused against the colonials. The British did the same with separating the Muslims from the Hindus in the Punjab & Bengal. They did the same by appointing minority Sunni rulers over majority Shia in much of the middle east.
It is no worse than the way blacks & Hispanics are treated in some parts of the US.
In my 30+ years in NZ I have been discriminated against many times. Several times a work. Once someone refused to rent a house to me and my wife though we are professionals.
The bigotry and hate exhibited here on this thread is worse than any caste discrimination.
The very motive to start this thread with an extreme view point that has no corroboration and then to vilify Gandhi (one of history's greatest humanists) is evidence enough of the hateful bigotry.

crbutlerIf I chose to move to India, I would expect that I would have to adapt to all and adopt some of the local customs. Ditto China, Mexico, NZ, or Zimbabwe.
If you immigrate, that’s part of the rationale. “There” is better than “here” for some reason.
It would make sense to me that an Indian expat would not have great things to say about where he came from, if for no other reason as to explain why they moved.
Caste systems (even if it’s a bastardized Brit version) and arraigned marriages are antithetical to the US culture as a whole. You want to do that, don’t come here.
As to your point re the British Raj changing the caste structure, Naki, as you point out, India has a very long history and has been free of British rule for a lot longer than they were subject to it- why has it not reverted back to “what it was” before the Brit’s if the Indians think their system was and is better? After all, India never was really subjected by the British, but rather the Brits used locals to do the dirty work. After all, India has been its own country for better than 80 years since Ghandi helped get the empire out.

NakihunterDoc
Please stop embarrassing yourself with such ignorant and ridiculous posts.
The British started colonising India in the late 1600 after pretending to trade on fair terms. They left in 1947. Do the maths. India has been independent for less than 78 years while the British were in charge for over 250 years.
How does 78 years become "much longer than" 250+ years?
Do you know how many Indian soldiers died in the two world wars fighting for the British?
I definitely question your MORAL COMPAS.

crbutlerHow long was India a separate nation (for lack of a better term) before Britain?
And my moral compass is fine if I am not supporting arranged marriages and naming people by birth to a caste system that subjects some to perpetual underclass. How’s yours, since you seem to keep minimizing and defending it?
The caste system predates the Raj.
It was undoubtedly very abusive to the lower castes before the Europeans set foot. Maybe the British made it worse, I don’t know, but a system that condemns some as “untouchables” by accident of birth has its warts.
I at no time accused ALL Indians of bad behavior, but the continuation of a birth caste system by modern India is a black mark on them.
